Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 59.2/100, a mean average of 57.1/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 57.1/100. The standard deviation for this album is 19.1.

Interesting album. I think it's way below the quality of their other releases but there are parts of this I really enjoy.
The Love Within comes across a bit like a novelty song but it's difficult not to have a fondness for its earnest positivity. The return of the silly guitar effects later in the album (Virtue) threatens my patience though.
Some of the tracks (Only He Can Heal Me, Different Drugs) have this dark, atmospheric, almost monastic feel to them that is pretty compelling.
The religious themes in a lot of the lyrics may be a turn-off for some but I think it's an interesting perspective you don't always hear in this style of music. It never comes across as preachy either - you can tell Kele's faith is very personal to him.
Some of the other tracks feel pretty uninspired. I think I would only recommend this album to the curious but there are some good ideas to be found here if you're looking.
this one just fell short, like I expected. and it kinda sucks, as it was one of my favorite bands...
Lord give me grace and dancing feet and the old Bloc Party back.
The opening line of the first song might make you think Bloc is back with full force, but the album leaves you disappointed. Not because it's a bad album, but because it's such a wasted potential. The band's decision to go for slower songs is baffling. Sure, one or two in the albums is fine (SRXT, for example), but where's the sound the band is known for? Listen to the songs at 1.25x speed and you'll see they all sound better.
Nevertheless, there's good stuff here. Into the Earth is probably Bloc's best song since A Weekend in the City. The Good News and Virtue are pretty good. The Love Within isn't bad at all.
Mixed with that are boring songs that just can't be told apart. Fortress, Exes, Living Lux, Different Drugs don't do anything except remind you how good this band used to be
maybe NME was trying to be ironic lol
NME said of this, and I quote: "Their most sombre, haunted and immersive record to date, it’s so drenched in quasi-religious themes and tones it could be a sister piece to the Pope’s recent kick-ass rock album."
I'm beginning to think that they accidentally listened to the wrong albums. How this is more "haunted and immersive" (haunting, perhaps?) than Silent Alarm is beyond me, but they also said the pope's album was "kick ass" so maybe they just downloaded the wrong leaks.
This album is a disappointment just like every release of this band since Intimacy (2008). Hymns is not a terrible album, it's just not what I expect from Bloc Party...
Favorite track: The Love Within (excellent pop-rock song), Virtue, Exes
Less favorite track: So Real, The Good News, Fortress,
