Love this album. The opening track tells you that you should pay attention, even though the rest of the album is in a totally different style. He got a great voice and is definitely worth seeing live!
Favorite song: Dark Child
Leave it to an Aussie to make one of the best Americana records of recent memory. On his remarkable debut, he relentlessly breaks away from predictability, while aiming for great heights. The album starts fast with the rollicking country of “Hello Lonesome Miss.” It’s an attention grabber that does little to hint what’s actually coming with the rest of the record. “After All” follows, sounding like Crazy Horse doing power pop. Then, with “Dark Child,” Williams steps into a similar type of noir folk that Timber Timbre has mastered so well. On “I’m Lost Without You” Williams shifts further to the crooner country of Roy Orbison. Sweeping orchestrations and a ghostly backing choir accentuate his big voice. He follows that with a more minimal folk ditty in “Lonely Side of Her.” “Silent Passage” could be confused for early Neil Young. Possibly the most unusual tune on the record, “Strange Things” is shifts from a simple country tune about the loss of a wife to cancer to a haunted waltz about her ghost. He evokes Tim Buckley on the beautiful “When I Was a Young Girl.” The closer “Everyone’s Got Something To Say” once again finds Williams channeling classic Neil Young, and Gillian Welch as well.
Marlon draws inspiration from rich music history with an obvious genuine passion. There’s undoubtedly reference points throughout, but Williams does a good job at establishing his own unique voice. And oh what a voice he has!
