Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by
Captain Spacker (2012)
This isn't exactly a best ever albums chart, because honestly if I did that it would probably just end up like everyone else's with The Beatles, Radiohead and Pink Floyd in a list. This is more based on how much I enjoy listening to the albums and what I'd recommend to friends first.
The 60's had the best bands, the 80's the best songs and today we have the best albums.

1. (=)![]() | Slanted & Enchanted | Pavement
| This is not a perfect album by any means, or arguably even the best. It is however by far my favourite, it wears it's heart on it's sleeve and favours innovation and fun over any technical wankery. I never found the lo-fi production to take anything away from the music, the fact that it so clearly is a bunch of kids first albums really imbues the whole with a great sense of personality and charm. Also more than any other Pavement record this one is equally heavy on ballads letting Malkmus really stretch his legs and use his fantastic lyrics. I don't know what "crotch mavens and one night lays" means but it breaks my heart. | |||||||||||||||||||||

2. (=)![]() | In Rainbows | Radiohead
| People chalk up Radiohead's success to there song crafting, originality, fantastic musicianship etc. I can't really comment with too much insight, but all I know is Radiohead do something to my minds eye that few others are capable of. It's hard to explain, but it's so easy to lose yourself in the moods of their songs. A brief tangent but I had corrective eye surgery a wile back and the stress, temporary blindless and their music was honestly making me trip out of head sober. | |||||||||||||||||||||

3. (=)![]() | Superunknown | Soundgarden

I'm always surprised to see people overlook the themes I see in this album. For me it always seemed like a religious album: 4th of July bemoans Jesus being buried, Spoonman prays to tribal rhythms, Black Hole Sun to the apocalypse, Head Down is overtly religious and Chric Cornell actually looks like the second coming. It seems to be like a man bored with his life desperately looking for something greater to cling onto, I mean The Day I Tried To Live is an underrated slacker anthem if there was ever such a thing. Unlike their adolescent "grunge" counterparts Soundgarden show a fantastic sense of maturity. While the religious themes may lead you to expect preaching and pretence Cornell is steadfast in moderation, accepting other peoples beliefs on My Wave and an almost conservative social viewpoint on She Likes Surprises. If you rate albums as conceptual wholes; a collection of songs with distinct personalities that tie together this album without a shadow of doubt would take my top spot |

4. (5) ![]() | Pet Sounds | The Beach Boys
| A notes section just doesn't seem good enough to express why Pet Sounds is such a good album. There are so many reasons but Brian Wilson just puts his heart right out there, I love to see genuine humanity in a record and the way each each song frankly and superbly sums up a different mood, a different emotion, a different event each and everyone can relate to is fantastic. | |||||||||||||||||||||

5. (6) ![]() | Marquee Moon | Television
| I've never known such a confident and assured vocal performance as their is on this record. Verlaine dominates this album for me, strutting around with charm and all the best lines. As a band though Television back him up perfectly and the solos are technical and tight enough to complement the vocals confidence. | |||||||||||||||||||||

6. (7) ![]() | Yankee Hotel Foxtrot | Wilco
| This has a magnificent joie de vivre to it. I'd heard alot about it's depth before listening to it but was in no way prepared for just how enjoyable this album is to listen to. I'd compare this in many ways to Pet Sounds in that real emotion underlies every song. The whole thing swirls and bleeps, it's dreamy and mercurial, with Jeff Tweedy being the every man you can identify with. | |||||||||||||||||||||

7. (8) ![]() | Lateralus | Tool
| How long can you listen to a song? I'm bored of even my favourite song after 60 odd listens. I've spent days and days listening to each of these tracks because there is so much in each song to pick up on. There are moody intros, fantastic bridges, brilliant little production touches and easily the best lyrics you will find any where, especially in metal. And for a change the little intermissions really bring something to the album, personality and definition and just a drop of fun to the heaviness. | |||||||||||||||||||||

8. (9) ![]() | The Suburbs | Arcade Fire
| The other Arcade Fire albums always felt a little . . . insincere and forced. Don't worry, this album is as smart as the rest of their work but The Suburbs is just that tiny bit more playful. Rococo has a fantastic ridiculous chanting chorus, Sprawl II is a new wave delight and Month of May punks out more than any whiny Canadian deserves to. | |||||||||||||||||||||

10. (11) ![]() | Axis: Bold as Love | The Jimi Hendrix Experience
|
It's so weird to me that Hendrix is this kind of larger than life God. His pictures are always accompanied by psychedelia and larger than life colour, his musicianship is talked about in hushed, revered tones and the reputation of his live performances overshadows all gigs to come. And yet, to me, he his clearly a man like you and I. The influence Dylan had on Jimi seems clear as day and if I might be so bold I'd champion Hendrix as the better lyricist to Bob any day. Songs like Little Wing and Castles Made Of Sand are intimate, bordering on shyness and Bold As Love is nothing but pure poetry to my ears. Jimi's output is consistently good and you may as well consider places 13 and 14 Hendrix's too because I don't have the heart the to split them up nor the space to devote my love to the man |

I do like your list, fantastic. But Dylan's a better lyricist than Hendrix. Come on, now.
Ballsy chart. Outstanding that you took the time to write out why you included these particular albums. Great job!
The choice is fine, but some comments are genuine!
Great diversity, as well as explanations to why you like these albums!
Great! Diverse, unpredictable, and some awesome choices!
If I had a personality disorder this would be my other chart. Feels incredibly familiar. Your comment about Malkmus being able to break your heart whilst not having a clue what he's talking about is absolutely bang on.
Great chart.
Our lists are somewhat similar.
Can't criticize you 'sept for the System of a Down entry; Great Chart with a varied taste.
a good chart and a great #1 ! For me LCD Soundsystem is more a punk band than a dance band, and they are not any band, one of my top 10 ever ! I feel the same about Pearl Jam, an ok band but not one of the greatest
I wouldn't say I was complaining about Boston, but it seems more like a guilty pleasure. Just looking at your Top 10 I think it's fair to expect a lot of serious choices, which you have, and then Boston is kind of something I can't picture myself enjoying unless no one's around to catch me.
