My goodness, what a heartbreaking song. Told from the perspective of a lonely patron at a late-night bar, this is the story of "these old tom-cat feelings" that the narrator feels watching a woman from across the room, imagining the loneliness she might be thinking. Before he musters the nerve to walk over and talk with her, though, she leaves. The song ends, "...And I think that I just fell in love with you." Gorgeous, sad, and lonely. That's the general feeling on Closing Time.
