At first I was sorta underwhelmed by this record. Elliott's voice seemed weak and the melodies didn't seem all that great. I don't know what the f I was thinking! Somewhere along the line I was walking home in the cold and I put this album on and everything hit, all the aspects of this album that I liked before I liked even more and all the aspects I didn't like, I loved. The thing about Elliott Smith's voice is it is so quiet and unimposing it just makes me feel that much more attuned to the feel of the words, the melody, all the emotion in the songs. And these songs with their austere acoustic arrangements and simple, almost flat sounding drums, has an incredible amount of emotion! I really love this album!
Best song: "Alameda" and "Angeles" and "Between the Bars" and definitely "Say Yes"! _________________ -Ryan

This album is amazing, and the vocals are brilliant. My favourite song is Rose Parade, but I also love Speed Trials, Cupid's Trick, Ballad of Big Nothing and No Name No. 5.

The great Portland album, and really the ultimate lying-on-the-street-drunk-at-3-am-with-nowhere-to-go-and-unable-to-hold-back-the-tears companion.

Serendipity for me. I just find this site, and book your talking about my boy Elliott. I actually saw a performance this year of this album by The Section Quartet. Just beautiful. Brought out the depth in some of the works you could easily blow by like No Name No. 5 or Cupid's Trick. Perhaps more obviously, Between the Bars is the standout among standouts. Gun to my head, it's the title I'd give if asked for my favorite song of all time.
As it is in general with Elliott though, it's not really about the "album". He's an artist of moments. He captures a little bit of life and makes you see it and feel it like you never have before. In that sense, this album is arguably his most moment-filled album, and hence perhaps his greatest, but I'm much more inclined to bring him out for a song or two than I am to listen to it all in one sitting.

Wow. Fortuitous timing indeed. EMA is my top find of the past several years. I find her work so cathartic, and while it's clearly well received, I believe you're the first person I've just run into like this.
