I've totally been digging this album of late. The pacing is very spectacular & meditative. What do u think, Kev?
edit: Haha! Just noticed that you might only have had it for like 6 minutes or so. Still loved to hear your thoughts regardless. ๐คฃ

I really don't understand how this seems to be the RYM (and BEA to a lesser extent) classical go-to pick. It's good and all but tremendously overrated imo...

I enjoyed it thoroughly, but I'll be honest by the time the last track was on I kinda wanted it to end ๐คฃ
I like it though, might have to revisit it in the future ๐

๐ Yeah. I'm not feeling it either. Sleater-Kinney's worst album I'd say. Just sort of meh. Still hoping I'm going to come around to its charm at some point, but I just don't think the songs are very memorable. Totally thinking of selecting that Screaming Females album for next week though. Really dug their last one that Frogger turned me on to.

Yeah, I'm not well versed in classical works at all and found it while scouting my year. Give me something to compare it to & I'll let you know because maybe I was just thirsty for that kind of style especially with my illness & all. I found it very spiritual. School me, /0!
Hmmmm, Let's break this out again....

Tabula Rasa by Arvo Pรคrt
That violin that starts the whole thing off kicks ass. I think why people like this is that violin has a very aggressive, almost chaotic quality at time so its going to appease rock n'rollers. Even the piano has a vey percussive, thunderous element to it at times.

I'll readily admit that this thing can be downright spiritual at times, but I feel like it tries to incorporate Riley-esque minimalism with dynamic strings and just an overall pop sensibility, and as a result doesn't really excel any any of it. Neo-romantic strings will break out of the melodic minimal atmosphere for brief excursions, and it's pleasent enough but feels all too directionless, and even when everything does come together rather well, I still feel like it's been done better in the past by Charles Ives and Henryk Gรณrecki (among others), and even the more pop-oriented bits have been done better by Gavin Bryars and Eleni Karaindrou, just as the minimalist textures have been implemented to what I feel is a far more emotionally affecting extent by Steve Reich and and the aforementioned Terry Riley. I dunno, it's not bad by any means but every time I put on Pรคrt I almost immediately get the urge to switch to one of his contemporaries. I would definitely recommend these:

Gyรถrgy Ligeti: Atmosphรจres by Claudio Abbado / Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra

Henryk Gorecki: Symphony No. 3 by David Zinman / Dawn Upshaw / London Sinfonietta
these are all very different takes on a lot of the same themes and motifs explored on Tabula rasa. I have a feeling you'd like at least one ๐
