Imperial by Denzel Curry
No, this is not a Denzel Washington/ Steph Curry collab. This is a banger hip hop album with some of the best beats you will hear this year. He brings some insightful lyrics with the hard beats. Definitely one of my favorites of the year.

I liked it, it was pretty cool.

From my music diary thing:

Quote:
I think that more than anything, this album establishes Denzel Curry as a rapper. It shows the potential that he has, there are some tracks on here that are really great. Songs like "ULT" and "Pure Enough" show that Curry can take just about any beat and give it mainstream appeal. Even most of "Story: No Title" is great, though there are lines that kind of make you raise an eyebrow ("Who says Jesus can't be a black guy?/Even Luke Skywalker's dad was on the dark side", which is funny but random and kind of nonsensical.) Some of this needs improvement, and I think Curry can do it because he shows flashes of brilliance, but overall this is a fairly enjoyable album.

Probably my favourite thing Curry has done, though that's not saying much. His energy is refreshing, but his style feels a little too one-note and repetitive to hold my attention for the span of a full-length, and he doesn't have the innate melodic sense or memorable hooks of Future, Young Thug, or Kevin Gates. That said, as a dark, sinister, leftfield take on trap (as viewed through a Three 6 kaleidoscope), Curry is carving out his own lane, and improving lyrically at the same time. This isn't close to being the best hip-hop release I've heard this year (there are at least 12 or 13 that I prefer, just off the top of my head), but it's an interesting take on trap from an artist with undoubted potential.

sorry I took so long to get around to this. I'm really terrible at following lyrics, even when they're clear like this. so I'm just sorta taking it by the musicality of flow and the beats. the beats are interesting, keep things moving and feeling dynamic, and also overall have that a lot of contemporary sort of sound, but with some color from watery guitars or like... I don't know like some sort of 80s synth style on the first track. I don't even really know if those things are that unusual tho. One thing that did stick out to me was there would be those sort of dry broken sounding synth things, like they were chopped up with little slices removed, can't think of how to describe them but they stick out in the mix a bit for me. and with the cadence of the vocals, there's something about the steadiness of it that doesn't quite click with me. so I dunno if this is quite for me, but it's still really listenable since the beats keep things moving quite nicely. thanks for the pick, I'm glad I checked it.

Anyway, quite a challenge for me to write anything, as I honestly know shit about hip hop. I hardly ever focus on lyrics and I cannot say much about the flow of particular rappers, so I concentrate on the instrumental bit. This one ran rather smoothly. Knotty Head and Pure Enough are my favourites.

I really dug it. Love the urgency of the whole thing, some sweet beats too.

It's given me a condition where I can't stop listening to 'Knotty Head'.
