Though I personally prefer Blonde On Blonde and Highway 61 by a pretty wide margin over Desire (and a majority of rock albums), Desire is indeed among his most refined and you really can't go wrong with any of them. John Wesley Harding, Basement Tapes and Oh Mercy are three others that don't get enough attention but are on par with, or maybe just below, Desire (imo).

I can understand that. I wouldn't place Desire far above Blood on the Tracks, which is a fantastic album, particularly Idiot Wind (among his best songs). Also, really like the touching Simply Twist of Fate too, the winding journey of Tangled up in Blue, the revolving theatrical doors of Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts, the poignant intimacy of Shelter from the Storm, If You See Her, Say Hello, You're a Big Girl Now...

Idiot Wind is one of those Dylan songs that I show people when they say "Oh Bob Dylan can't sing for shit.'
I'm just glad I listened to BotT before my first break up. God damn if If You See Her Say Hello isn't the most perfect song for that.
My rank of favorite Dylan records would probably be
Blood on the Tracks
Blonde
Bringing It All Back Home
Highway 61
Even though you can make a case for all those records being number 1. Throwing in records like Desire, Freewheelin, Love and Theft, and even Nashville Skyline.. the dude just has an unfair discography.

Like Dylan and Young, they each had runs of several great albums at one time in their career.
Bowie holds a special place in my heart so for me his great run spanned the whole of the 70s aside from one or two albums, but almost everything after Scary Monsters is garbage.

Yeah, I'd definitely rank him among the greatest rock artists of all time.
My favorites would probably go:
1. Blonde On Blonde
2. Highway 61 Revisited
3. Desire
4. Basement Tapes
5. Oh Mercy
6. John Wesley Harding
7. Blood on the Tracks
8. Bringing it all Back Home
After that the albums are a bit uneven and listing them gets a bit muddled

Why is there no The Times Are A Changin' love?
That's my favorite record of his. Mostly him and his poetry- the stuff he's amazing at.

Just proves my point that if even a small group of people skip over a record like that, the discography is too legendary.
But yeah that record is pretty great. Very different feel from a lot of Dylan's other stuff. Very stark.

Depending on my mood, this can range from anywhere between my 1st and 5th favourite Dylan album, holds a place in my heart as the first one I ever bought and heard from him. Fantastic stuff.
