Ah yes. The main event. The closest thing to a Louisville vs Kentucky match we get here in the Elite 8 round. As I mentioned in the Kingdom Come vs Slayer post I am keeping track of where all these albums rank in the RYM Metal (+all subgenres) chart. And of the last 8 albums, its perhaps no surprise these 2 albums are the highest ranked. Sky Valley comes in at the highest of #16. Vol 4 comes in at #21. A couple giants.
As for my vote, I quite easily rolled with Sabbath's Vol. 4. At the beginning of this tournament I merely loved this album. It was then my favorite sabbath album, and it still is. However since the toruney started I've listened to it maybe 20 times and each time it has grown more and more on me. It's just an album that seems so goddamn perfect. Even the weird tangents it goes on, or the weepy ballad "Changes" have become dear to me. This may be my favorite metal or hardrock album ever now. Right there neck and neck with Jailbreak and Reign In Blood.
Not to say Sky Valley isn't also REALLY cool. Cuz it really is. I perhaps need more time with it. Both listens have been great, but I haven't remotely connected with it to the degree I have my other favorites in this torunament. Still, some of the grooves on Sky Valley are honestly completely mindblowing.
And I will now rank my love of the remaining albums, just for funzies (the paranthetical number next to each album is their RYM rank:
#1 - Vol 4 by Black Sabbath (21)
#2 - Seasons In The Abyss by Slayer (29)
#3 - At The Heart of Winter by Immortal (69)
#4 - Bergtatt by Ulver (39)
#5 - Dopethrone by Electric Wizard (26)
#6 - Welcome to Sky Valley by Kyuss (16)
#7 - To The Nameless Dead by Primordial (90)
#8 - Kingdom Come by Sir Lord Baltimore (435) _________________ -Ryan
