Tracks On Wax 4 by Dave Edmunds

DAVE EDMUNDS
TRACKS ON WAX 4
1978-SWAN SONG
Produced By DAVE EDMUNDS

1. Trouble Boys
2. Never Been In Love
3. Not A Woman, Not A Child
4. Television
5. What Looks Best On You
6. Readers Wives
7. Deborah
8. Thread Your Needle
9. A.1. On The Jukebox
10. It's My Own Business
11. Heart Of The City

All of the Dave Edmunds and Nick Lowe solo albums from this period were actually recorded by Rockpile, a second level supergroup that couldn't use the name because of contractual issues. Tracks On Wax 4 is the 2nd Edmunds album by the band, and it's his most hard rocking effort by far. With Billy Bremner, Terry Williams and Lowe as sidemen, Edmunds powers through this great set of short but sweet guitar rockers like there's no tomorrow. And this is catchy stuff. "Trouble Boys", "Never Been In Love", "Thread Your Needle"...all could have been hits. A couple of subpar tracks in the middle ("What Looks Best On You" and "Readers Wives") keep this from being Edmunds' best work, but it's still very good.

Anything from the mid to late 70's period by Edmunds or Nick Lowe is worth having, and it's interesting to hear how they contributed to each others work. For Edmunds in particular, this album and Get It are the best.

Lost Highway (December 1948 - March 1949): Vol. III by Hank Williams

HANK WILLIAMS
LOST HIGHWAY: DECEMBER 1948-MARCH 1949 VOL III
1986-POLYDOR
Produced By TIM ROGERS & BARRY FELDMAN

1. There'll Be No Teardrops Tonight
2. Lost On The River
3. I Heard My Mother Praying For Me
4. Lost Highway
5. May You Never Be Alone
6. Dear Brother
7. Jesus Remembered Me
8. Honky Tonk Blues
9. Mind Your Own Business
10. A Teardrop On A Rose
11. Wait For The Light To Shine
12. The Angel Of Death
13. Dixie Cannonball
14. Sundown And Sorrow
15. I'm Going Home
16. Singing Waterfall
17. No, Not Now
18. Blue Love In My Heart
19. California Zephyr
20. I'm Free At Last
21. Alabama Waltz

Back in 1986, everything was being released on CD. Which meant that there were a lot of really cool new packages of great old music. This collection was created to be a complete and chronological record of the entire Hank Williams catalog. So...there's really nothing that can be wrong with it. And there isn't. Covering a 4 month period between 1948 and 1949, this shows how prolific Williams really was, and how consistently good his writing and recording was.

The series also includes excellent liner notes and song credits. Unfortunately, the series has been long out of print, so you'll have to really dig to find any of the volumes. But it's really worthwhile. A very well done series.

Songs From Another Season by David J

DAVID J
SONGS FROM ANOTHER SEASON
1990-BEGGAR'S BANQUET
Produced By DAVID J & JOHN A RIVERS

1. I'll Be Your Chauffeur
2. Fingers In The Grease
3. A Longer Look
4. Sad Side To The Sandboy
5. New Woman Is An Attitude
6. Sweet Anasthesia
7. On The Outskirts (Of A Strange Dream)
8. I'll Be Your Chauffeur (Original Version)
9. The Moon In The Man
10. Little Star
11. Stranded Trans-Atlantic Hotel Nearly Famous Blues
12. The National Anthem Of Nowhere
13. Nature Boy

David J was originally David Haskins. Then, he was David Jay, the bassist for Bauhaus. After that band broke up, he played with the Jazz Butcher. When Peter Murphy bailed on the Bauhaus reunion, the rest of the band formed Love & Rockets, and David Jay became David J. And in between Love & Rockets albums, J embarked on a surprisingly prolific and fruitful solo career. Songs From Another Season is his finest effort. Showcasing some great songwriting chops and the ability to play multiple instruments, this is no ordinary bass player's solo album.

The titles sound more like instrumental tracks...but they aren't. And the songs are as interesting as the titles. The music is not too far off from the low key music of Love & Rockets, and still recalls the goth roots of Bauhaus. J is a pretty unknown guy, and he seems to be happy just doing his thing. This is a nice one to pick up if you can find it.

Weight by Rollins Band

ROLLINS BAND
WEIGHT
1994-IMAGO
Produced By THEO VAN ROCK

1. Disconnect
2. Fool
3. Icon
4. Civilized
5. Divine Object Of Hatred
6. Liar
7. Step Back
8. Wrong Man
9. Volume 4
10. Tired
11. Alien Blueprint
12. Shine

One the one hand, Henry Rollins can sound kind of annoying. On the other hand, he's worth listening to because he's maybe the smartest person in rock. Weight is a worthy album, not only because "Liar" is a truly magnificent song that also made for the best moment ever on Beavis And Butthead, but because it also contains gems like "Disconnect" and "Shine". Weight may be the best work by Rollins Band, and if you don't like it, ol' Henry might just kick your ass. For sure.

Of course, Rollins isn't for everyone. But his career as an author, actor, frontman for Black Flag, and his solo career are loaded with biting, intelligent pieces that need to be heard. And really...how many artists really, REALLY, need to be heard?

Live! by Ruben Blades y Son del Solar

RUBEN BLADES Y SON DEL SOLAR
LIVE
1990-ELEKTRA
Produced By RUBEN BLADES

1. Decisiones
2. Cuentas Del Alma
3. El Pdre Antonio
4. Pedro Navaja
5. Todos Vuelven
6. La Cancion Del Final Del Mundo
7. Ojos De Perro Azul
8. Buscando America
9. Muevete

Ruben Blades may be the most famous person from Panama, and also maybe the smartest. he is not only an actor (more than 20 films to his credit), an attorney with a degree from Harvard, and the Panamanian Minister Of Tourism, but he's also been releasing records since 1970. This live album is not just salsa...sure, you can dance to it, but you can tell that it's not just mindless music intended to only get you out of your seat.

Language barrier aside, I can tell you this...this is a blistering live set, as both Blades and the band are in excellent form. The band is tight, and Blades truly owns the stage. Ruben Blades rarely disappoints, and this is no exception.

16. Too Many Drivers
17. Woodie Woodie
18. Whiskey And Good Time Blues
19. Merry Go Round Blues
20. You've Got To Hit The Right Lick

Big Bill Broonzy (1898-1958) was one of the great pioneers of blues music. This collection covers his classic recordings made between 1930 and 1940. Starting with Broonzy solo on "I Can't Be Satisfied" and moving to group recordings, Broonzy shows why he is held in such high regard. He's a great singer, writer, and guitarist. And every track here is great...not a weak moment to be fgound anywhere.

The package also includes fine liner notes and info on each song. Broonzy went on to continued success after 1940, recording until shortly before his death in 1958. Guys like this need to be remembered. A fine collection.

Camper Van Beethoven by Camper Van Beethoven|

CAMPER VAN BEETHOVEN
1986-IRS
Produced By CAMPER VAN BEETHOVEN

1. Good Guys & Bad Guys
2. Joe Stalin's Cadillac
3. Five Sticks
4. Lulu Land
5. Une Fois
6. We Saw Jerry's Daughter
7. Surprise Truck
8. Stairway To Heavan (sic)
9. The History Of Utah
10. Still Wishing To Course
11. We Love You
12. Hoe Yourself Down
13. Peace & Love
14. Folly
15. Interstellar Overdrive
16. Shut Us Down

On their third album, Camper Van Beethoven added Eugene Chadbourne, a multi instrumentalist with whom they would also collaborate on two non Camper albums with. The results start off promising enough. "Good Guys & Bad Guys" and especially "Joe Stalin's Cadillac" are terrific. Unfortunately, the album does a slow decline from there, sometimes drifting off into simply noise. And while the song titles hint at a certain strange Led Zeppelin obesession, it's never actually addressed.

The Beethovens had many finer moments after this. The album turned out to be a turning point for them, but it never quite takes off. Still an interesting listen, although it gets a little too long in spots.

This Is The Voice by Agent Orange

AGENT ORANGE
THIS IS THE VOICE
1986-RESTLESS
Produced By DANIEL R VAN PATTEN

1. Voices (In The Night)
2. It's In Your Head
3. Say It Isn't True
4. Fire In The Rain
5. In Your Dreams Tonight
6. Tearing Me Apart
7. ...So Strange
8. Bite The Hand That Feeds (Part 1)
9. I Kill Spies
10. This Is Not The End

Agent Orange was part of the late 70's California punk movement, but they had a sound that owed just as much to surf music as it did the Sex Pistols. Thus, they found their audience with the skateboarders, and made some pretty terrific and unnoticed music through the 80's. This Is The Voice is their finest albnum, a great collection of songs that, although not as edgier as their other work, is more melodic and more memorable. Without getting all poppy.

"Voices" (In The Night)" and "I Kill Spies" are just two of the highlights here. Agent Orange mixes its surf and punk sensibilities well. This is a band that never quite found the mainstream, which turned out to be a good thing for those who know about them. Check this one out...a very fine effort.

Strong Again by Marion Williams

MARION WILLIAMS
STRONG AGAIN
1991-SPIRIT FEEL
Produced By ANTHONY HEILBUT

1. Prayer List
2. This Wicked Race
3. Strong Again
4. Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child
5. God Bless The Child
6. Holy Ghost Don't Leave Me
7. Peace Be Still
8. Working On A Building
9. In My Heart
10. The New Burying Ground
11. A Charge To Keep I Have
12. Wake Me, Shake Me
13. O Happy Day
14. He'll Understand And Say Well Done
15. Lion In The Tribe Of Judah
16. He's Yet Alive
17. I Thank You Lord
18. Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah
19. If You See Me Savior
20. Just As I Am

The number of gospel albums in my collection is small, but Marion Williams alone makes the genre well represented. One of the greatest gospel singers of all time, she recorded Strong Again just 3 years before her death at 67, with a voice still as strong and powerful as ever. She tears through standards and original compositions, and simply makes music that's great to listen to, regardless of if you agree with the message or not.

"Prayer List" is the strongest of her originals, but the entire record is strong. A truly great voice, and a truly incredible album. Not for everyone, but if you can appreciate, you'll love this.
