A shame. Definitely the reason I did not buy this one.
The guy who designed this gave a lecture at my university. I hated the design originally, but he totally justified his decisions to the point I actually think it's a bold decision for a cover.
It might not look amazing, but good design isn't always about just aesthetics. It might seem lazy but it's ultimately just an existing image with text on top - I'm sure we all have a favourite album cover that's just the same.

I agree, it is bold. But it is also quite stupid. (In my opinion.) _________________ When the stewardess is near do not show any fear.
For the rest I'm going through my collection of favorite records and some of the covers might be ugly but I love them anyway because I hold them so dearly and in a way they are all good symbolisations of the albums they represent.
And that's also quite a brash thing to say. The idea was to dismantle history and 'reverence' and remove its identity and the chosen method was as simple a solution as you can get - a white square. You have a whole album about moving forward, that's called 'The Next Day', and you have an album cover about discarding the past and creating something new from it. I think that's pretty neat. Not stupid.
It was designed so anyone with basic photo editting tools could recreate the cover - I don't know if you were on social media around the time it came out, but before it was even official people were altering their profile pictures to match the cover. You can't do that with most other album covers, and it quickly becomes a huge marketting tool. Any piece of design people start taking into their own hands and creates a discussion has done something right.
Well, I added "in my opinion" which I normally do not do, because it goes without saying. A cover should sell a record. So how many people bought the album because of the "neat" cover. How many did not buy it, because they found it ugly? _________________ When the stewardess is near do not show any fear.

Calling something stupid might be an opinion, but it's also an insult. I could call you stupid (which I don't think you are) but I wouldn't expect you to not take offence purely because it's my opinion. To argue semantics, an album cover can't be stupid - the people who made it can be stupid. You can find an album cover ugly, sure, that's your outlook.
If you want to measure how successful art or design is purely by how well it sells its product, then fine, but don't you think that's a bit of a cynical stance?
Besides, the album topped the charts in 12 countries, so it can't have been as off-putting as you think.
