Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 67.3/100, a mean average of 66.8/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 66.8/100. The standard deviation for this album is 14.0.

Arc of Bar and the opener are great, but not good enough to overcome the blandness of the rest of the album. There's no evidence of their supposed Talking Heads influence on here though. Just generic rock sounds through and through.
2012's rather excellent 'Celebration Rock' was my Japandroids entry point and it would go on to be one my favourites for that year
And so 5 years on 'Near To The Wild Heart Of Life' arrives, a rather long wait IMO for 8 tracks and 38 minutes of new material , and it's quite the mixed bag
The Excellent ?: The nearly 8 minute "Arc of Bar" is the albums pillar and clearly best moment followed by track 3 "True Love and a Free Life ..."
The Good?: "North East South West" , the surprising love song "I'm Sorry .." and "No Known Drink or Drug" are all ok and get a pass mark
The Bad?: and this is where the album lets itself down ...the title track , "Midnight to Morning"and "In A Body Like A Grave" all don't work all and unfortunately subtract from the album over all
So we end up with 2 great tracks, 3 really poor tracks and 3 OK tracks & my score will reflect this
On my 2017 best albums list , but ONLY barely just ..and low down

japandroids grow up and listen to a lot of bob seger records -- this is the result
I had high hopes for this project. Now I wasn't disappointed but I keep feeling that it could've been better. Then again, it was never going to top 2012's "Celebration Rock".
Okay record, gets very samey after a while. The title track is a cracker though.
The title track and "Arc of Bar" are great, but the rest seems to be really lacking creativity. It feels like stuff I've heard before from 4 King & Country, and even they aren't the most innovative band around. Japandroids = Canadian 4 King & Country, but minus the fact that 4 King & Country are a great Christian band which makes them stand out at least a little more.
This sounds.... old.
Pretty average...few songs brought this grade down for being quite awful. There was solid tracks though, but not good enough to likely revisit
On COS.net they talk about the album being 8 songs because they believe it to be the standard template for a great rock n roll album, and then mention The Stooges, Television, Led Zeppelin, Patti Smith, Black Sabbath and Talking Heads amongst others. Nice sentiments but this is rock by numbers in comparison. Nothing awful (apart from maybe track 4), but ordinary (apart from Arc of Bar) in my view and I'm not falling for that 'spiel' and buying it!
