Aside from “The Pan Within”, I didn’t much enjoy this. The overblown gated reverb on the first two tracks got to me, as did the lyrics to “Trumpets”. Yeesh. “This Is The Sea”, was fine, but not something I’ll go running back to. This band strikes me as the poor man’s The Cure.

I knew that this one was going to be good, but I wasn't prepared for how good it turned out. Nearly everything that I want out of this kind of music is present, and it's executed well. This is a bit of a stretch, but picture "Another Green World" but updated with a late 80s soundscape and textures. The production is also top notch; every sound is clear as a bell and mixed brilliantly. Certainly worth a listen if you like 80s Eno and Lanois or other 4AD album releases from this time period.
Jameth, Prefab Sprout occupy a unique space in the 80s pop scene. Give them a try.

The writing and arrangements might be complex, but I can’t get behind Prefab’s light pop rock sound. Those keyboards were a volley of pins to my eardrums. “Horsin’ Around” is an alright tune, but the rest has an agitating aesthetic. A younger me would have dismissed this as outright tacky, and while I don’t enjoy it much more than I would have ten years ago, I at least have a deeper understanding and appreciation for the work that went into crafting these songs. I didn’t do it for this album, but I think I should start pulling up lyrics to see what I might be missing...

It’s time to return to the cold sea, where once you slept with the fishes. I know, I know.
And I hope you understand how tempting it is to pick The Conet Project...it’s practically laughing at me.

Ooh, this is really cool psych folk with a lot of layers to peel back in future listening. As of now though, not every track is resonating, although I love the atmosphere it draws you into. Highlight: A Very Cellular Song is amazing. Lowlight: the use of sitar is a bit clumsy. 3.5/5.

This was a very enjoyable post-punk ride. The songs are well written and distinctly memorable, and the album on the whole is very consistent. “Here Comes A Regular” was the only real letdown. The only other qualm I have with Tim is that there isn’t a worldbeater track, but that’s pretty minor. Let It Be And their live album are now in the queue.

Bay, I just listened to Starsailor for the first time yesterday. I don’t agree with the site that it’s his best, but it’s still a great record.

I’m gonna modify the game a bit for myself. I want to avoid skimming the surface of 1985, so I’m gonna alternate between the top and bottom of the top 100.

"Zazou approached Sony Records with merely the title and the concept of songs from the Arctic. He was accompanied by cameraman Philippe Roméo as he recorded traditional folk songs in and from Alaska, Canada (Newfoundland), Greenland, Iceland, Japan, Scandinavia and Scotland. He incorporated the shamanic incantations and lullabies of aboriginal people such as the Ainu, Inuit, Nanai, and Yakuts.
The only original composition, "The Long Voyage", was written by Zazou as an expression of gratitude to his record company for granting him complete artistic freedom on the project. The song was released as a single and featured several remixes, including one by Mad Professor and by Zazou himself.
As lyrics no longer exist for the traditional song "Annukka Suaren Neito" for Sari Kaasinen of Varttina wrote lyrics based on the folk tale of the young girl Annukka who wants to marry a man who lives in the ocean."
It's a nice concept, and it's executed well, for the most part. The Suzanne Vega track is not very interesting and it does not follow the rest of the album's feel, but it was a consistently pleasing album otherwise. (A couple of tracks were missing though 🙁

I couldn’t pass up Arctic folk songs. Lioudmila Khandi’s vocals on “Yakut Song” (or “Iacoute Song”, I guess?) are phenomenal. I’d like to hear more of her music, but it doesn’t look like she’s recorded anything other than that one track.
Also, you forgot my pick, sir.

Dave Grohl is one of my favourite people in rock and I've seen Foo Fighters live three times but for some reason despite great singles I've never really felt the need to check out all their albums. I should though as I do enjoy them when I do. Really good alternative rock that just zooms by while listening. Not quite as good as The Colour And The Shape though, and to be honest if you don't like alternative rock there's probably no reason to listen to this. 8/10 and 12/26 for 2011.
Rocka, give Jameth The Descendants 😉 and let's listen to Cos.
