Lifestylez Ov Da Poor & Dangerous by Big L

Solid sampling/instrumentals and solid rapping gives this a 4/85, even if some of the lyrics aren't my favorite when it seemed like (I didn't pay that much attention) rape was kind of glorified. The other reason this is getting a higher rating is I felt like the consistency of the album was solid. Surprised there's rappers I hear about who imo suck, and then this is the first I'm hearing of Big L and it's great.

2. Well then Hellboy it is.

I was thinking about telling you about some of the lyricism on Big L Seth, but I didn't get around to it. Some of the lyrics are pretty problematic, but I've heard worse.

Hell III by Hell (US)

So, two doom metal albums in a row, and two albums that I enjoyed. This one brings in a lot of different elements to create an engaging an dynamic listen for a metal album, which is really what I'm after. There's heaviness, there's melodious passages, there's some Post-Rockiness; all things that I want in a piece of music like this. I've purposefully left 15 places off of my 2010's chart to let in some new listens, and this one might make it to have some metal diversity in there.

As much as I want you to get Slayer over with, Sam Cooke's Live at the Harlem Club is one of my favorites, so give that listen.

(BTW, I first checked out 1001 albums you must listen to... from the library when I was 14, and I'll give it some credit for making me want to look further into music. I like it a lot better than the Rolling Stone 500, because it understandably has a bit more diversity. Although, it's still pretty heavy on canonical artists like Dylan, Bowie, Stones, etc.)

Whiskey For The Holy Ghost by Mark Lanegan

A slow paced and accoustic based solo album from the lead singer of Screaming Trees. To be honest it was a bit of a depressing album, both in lyrical content and atmosphere. His voice is definitely the highlight for me, I love how it sounds weather-worn and tired of life's struggles. The second track, Borracho, was the only song that really stood out for me but the rest was consistent. Strangely J Mascis pulled drumming duties for a couple of songs, as well as Jack Endino, and Tad apparently. Not a bad album at all, just as I mentioned before probably a bit too depressing for my tastes at the moment. I think I preferred his debut solo album, The Winding Sheet more even if it was less consistent, and not as mature as this record. 7/10, and comes in at 46/59 in my 1994 chart.

Hellboy by Lil Peep
Thanks bay for that Facebook group, I was pretty triggered when I saw the Dark Comedy rating but it was a pretty fun browsing session.
Well first off, the lyrics are godawful. And I mean like, hilariously bad. However there was some weight to them considering how the poor guy ended up. The songs... all in all, I was positively surprised cause the songs are much better than I had anticipated. Sure they're very basic and there's usually not much going on in terms of production, but they're somewhat catchy and for some strange reason I found most of the album pretty enjoyable (when ignoring lyrics). Samples were a nice surprise. I haven't heard a whole lot of Peep songs, and although I've heard of his fascination with emo bands of the aughts, this was still a positive surprise. Underoath sample to kick off the album, there's Blink, Avenged Sevenfold, Bright Eyes, Modest Mouse... And the samples combined with raw and basic trap beats somehow make sense. So not a very good album from a musical perspective, but I found it nice overall. 6/10

Here's the deal with this strange little emo album. Nearly 200k views on youtube, but not on spotify or other streaming. And the singer is horribly embarrassed by it. His is the first comment on the RYM page, and there's some youtube comments as well. I could see why he might be somewhat embarrassed by this album (he did say that he wrote it when he was 17) but it's not that bad. Vocals and lyrics are not good, but they don't ruin the instrumentals, which are competent for the genre. I probably won't be returning to it, but it was fine for somebody's teenage bedroom project.

I'm now in that awkward position in which I don't really know any of those artists music except for James Ferraro, so go with him.

Live At The Harlem Square Club, 1963 by Sam Cooke

Super sad this dude's life was cut short. Dude's voice is so powerful. So much soul. There were moments I could visualize this concert, something a lot of live recordings don't do. Also, Dave Grohl must've picked a few things up from him because I feel like their showmanship/vocal timing live is similar. I think Otis Redding has a live at the Wiskey album that's almost on par, but this is better. Still not crazy about a high rating on this even though I was super excited to hear it/love Sam Cooke, it's just lately live albums have been less my thing - would give a 95 but going with a 90.

This one didn't make much of an impression on me either. It started off pretty good, and it has some moments of strangeness, but it became a pretty standard pop album by the end.

Glad you liked the Cooke album; get Slayer done, so you can move on from that chart.

Live At Primavera Sound 2012 by James Ferraro

In the middle of the album/song, 2nd listen, and I love it. It's too short, but I'm definitely in the mood for shorter albums right now so that's fine. A great comment from RYM: "It's like a rainy psychedelic forest rave at night". And that's exactly what it feels like. 8/10

I do know that The Stranger is Kirby's project though, so it's bound to be a good listen.

Cure For Pain by Morphine

Morphine show that you don't need guitar to make a really good bluesy, jazzy, alternative rock album, just vocals, drums, bass guitar, and a saxamaphone. I remember now Buena and Thursday got quite a bit of airplay here in 1993, and I wanted to hear this album then but never got a chance. I had since forgotten about them until now...I never heard about the vocalist/bassist passing away while performing on stage. How sad. Anyway I love the unique sound they create without guitar, and after the first few songs I was in a cool zone for the rest of the album. Thursday was the song I liked the most - maybe because in 1993 you could usually find me in the pub on a Thursday afternoon for a couple of beers, and a game of pool. However as usual I am not in alignment with the rest of BEA where I noticed Thursday is only ranked 10th highest out of Morphine's songs. 8/10 and 21/39 for 1993.

There's now none I've heard but a few albums that look interesting on this list Zep. Let's try Corbin - Mourn.
