1.

Francis Albert Sinatra And Antonio Carlos Jobim by Frank Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim

With the record starting out with The Girl from Ipanema, something I fondly remember playing standup bass on, it was like, well I guess this could be pretty good actually. And then I was like oh shit, Chief be right. My mom probably would love this record and she had this ability to accept terrible music like this as good. This was torture. 1/55

2. "Everything to love and hate about Free Improvisation on one record." - you have my attention... I love and hate it too! haha. Might just check that one out on my evergoing discovery on why I should listen to Free Jazz and actually enjoy it more than hey, I made some really annoying sounds, wanna here it - it's different and difficult, so of course it's better than anything else. Then some bullshit about how it represents a struggle of clean air vs pollution - I just had to represent it with the music man...

Anyway- Let's take Sturm und Drang for a spin (Storm & Stress - Storm & Stress)

Storm&stress by Storm and Stress

Little did RTB know that he gave the perfect follow up to the last album. This is another Free Improvisation album, but of a much different character. Ian Williams, of Don Caballero and Battles fame, fronts this Post/Math Rock Improvisational group. That is exactly what it sounds like. It's a bit of an oxymoron, since math rock relies on so much precision and tight songwriting, but it somehow makes sense. I wasn't blown away by much on the album, and it was longer than it should have been, but the organic formation of some of the better grooves on this album are truly inspiring. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it, but I was happy to hear a different take on the genre.

You're going to be getting into a lot of great albums at the end of the 60s, so there's better things on the horizon. That being said, listen to more bossa nova with Astrud Gilberto.

Electro-Shock Blues by Eels

OMG, I think I was close to tears a few times during this. A very powerful, emotional listen...especially knowing the background of what he had recently gone through with the the deaths of his family members. I love the sound of his voice, and the clarity of both his vocals and the lyrics. There are some really interesting things musically going on for a singer/songwriter indie pop album...some jazz drumming, some backward music, some country twinges etc. Personally I relate much more to the content of Beautiful Freak, which is my favourite album of 1996, and is an old favourite in my top 100 of all time, but this is probably the second best of the handful of eels albums I've heard. 8.5/10, 9/35 for 1998, and scrapes into my top 100 for the '90s at 93.

Quite a few of this current selection of yours Rocka interest me. Let's try Yura Yura Teikokou- Me No Car

Syro by Aphex Twin
This was pretty good! Much more upbeat than the two Aphex Twin albums I've listened to before (Selected Ambient Works 1 and 2). Certainly gets you in the mood. I'm still not totally buying the Aphex Twin cult status, but I'm starting to love his music more and more. 7.5/10

Listen to COC Blind. Their founding member and drummer Reed Mullin passed away a few days ago, so I've been listening to some of their stuff recently. He was only 53, pretty sad.

Me No Car by ゆらゆら帝国 [Yura Yura Teikoku]

A fun and solid rock album with catchy riffs and singable songs. If you know Japanese that is. I wanted to hear more from this group, because Shintaro Sakamoto is involved, and he's a great songwriter.

Ledzep, it's gonna be ATCQ for you.

Black Up by Shabazz Palaces

Ish from Digable Planets (one of my favorite hip-hop groups) makes much more experimental music with Shabazz Palaces. Lese Majesty is pretty good, but for some reason I hadn't gotten around to hearing this yet. It's definitely better. The beats and lyrics are creative and out-there, while the rhymes and flows are generally tight. It hasn't fully clicked with me after just one listen, but I wouldn't be surprised if it does with time. Starting it at a high 3.5/5.

Beach Samba by Astrud Gilberto

I'm torn here. My first impression was at least the music was ok, but the vocals/lyrics here are worse than Frank, and then even the music deteriorated. Sometimes you need a palette cleanser... 1/55.

Blind by Corrosion Of Conformity

I've always known about COC but never heard them before. This was not what I was expecting. For some reason I thought they were a fast thrashy band. This is some slow to mid tempo sludgy metal....and he sings...well shouty sings...but not the death growls I was expecting. Not bad, if not quite to my taste. So therefore without knowing the genre enough to have a discernible ear it was a bit too samish and long for me. 7/10, and 35/42 for 1991.

Call of the Valley by Shivkumar Sharma next.

Berg: Wozzeck by Christoph Von Dohnány...era Chorus

I can appreciate this as the so-called first atonal or avant-garde opera of the 20th century, but this is my least enjoyed example of 12-tone technique I’ve heard. I think this more due to the opera format, which always feels a little like reading a movie. It’s probably better when seen, as well as heard.

I read that Berg used particular notes or triads as motifs signifying characters in the opera, within his atonal framework, which piqued my interest. But, these are probably easier to locate if you speak German...

...or maybe see the opera. I just had the thought (took me long enough) to look for it on video, and I’ve found a movie adaptation from 1970 (complete with English subtitles). I’ve never considered that movie adaptations of operas would exist, which now makes seeing one a must for me. Wozzeck will do nicely.

Love Power Peace - Live At The Olympia, Paris, 1971 by James Brown

As expected, this is a great James Brown live album. He and the J.B.s are at the peak of their powers and bursting with funk energy. However, I'm not yet convinced that this is his best live album (the live half of Sex Machine is killer). The setlist is very solid, but it could have been stronger. Of course, that's just a minor quibble, as this really is fantastic listening. 4/5.
