To be fair I think you are level headed enough that you like plenty of pop records regardless. The poptimism "movement" has put stuff on its head roughly a decade ago (if not earlier, but really took hold about a decade ago). I remember when it was cool to have a bumper sticker that said, "drum machines have no soul" - now that's like a dumbass thing to say (kinda).

Iโ€™ve liked all of those better than Emotion.

Yeah - I can see that. Nothing wrong with both sides. I have to agree with you about why that album being put on a pedestal. I mean it isn't bad by any measure, if anything it is good by any measure, but so are a lot of pop albums (as you just indicated).

I think the reality is there's just more/different versions of the "same thing" (not really) and some appeal to others more. I like to think of it as parallel universes. Like what if Coca-Cola was never a thing and only Pepsi?

Anyway, I digress... well really excited to talk about anything than my next record:

1.

Headquarters by The Monkees

This had music in it. It was in the right key. And it had interesting arrangments... that were all flat and boring as hell. 2/60 for sure on this sucker. I nearly didn't finish it but decided to do so out of the principal (or something made up to make me a respectable human). Anyway, I then go check my last.fm and I don't get credit anyway... bastards. I think they got confused from when I listened to a podcast via Spotify. Hasn't worked since. Another one under the belt.

2. 592. Suede by Suede BBS - it's on my list later, so maybe you can help me decide if I'll cry for joy or pain.

I like a lot of these. NFR was my favorite album from last year and Art Angels is one of my favorites from this decade (and a lot of the songs there rival the ones on EMOTION). Tbh I wish there was another one I liked as much as EMOTION. I'll just have to keep listening. I've tried to describe what it is about it that hits me and I dont think I've ever succeeded. One thing is that it's much more upbeat and danceable than a lot of the ones you mentioned and a lot of the more laid back pop albums from the past few years. Maybe it's as simple as that? Dua Lipa has put out some great singles this year so I'm hoping her album delivers on that promise.

The Age Of Adz by Sufjan Stevens

I was secretly hoping this would slip through the cracks. But, I did tell Bay that I would give it a chance, so this was probably for the best. Now, I will say that, unlike Illinois and Carrie & Lowell, I didn't find this to be dreadful. It was perhaps even enjoyable at certain points (the extended coda to "Too Much" and "Now That I'm Older", in particular). But, no matter how many bleeps and bloops you shower upon a bad song, you're still left with a bad song. There isn't anything here that's going to stick in my head. The tunes are bland and the lyricism is Crayola-level. And although the electronica works nicely to largely cover it up, that mainstream indie aesthetic which I find nauseating and tacky still bleeds through in abundance.

Oh my christ have you got some folk masterworks moving in. But, I'll give you what's probably the best album of the bunch and what I should have given you last time.

Dirt by Alice In Chains

Oh man I would have blasted the shit out of this if I had of had it in the '90s. Great grunge/alternative metal album. Fantastic vocals, great music, and from what I could pick up some interesting lyrics. Rooster has always been one of my favourite songs and the rest of the album didn't disappoint. Not bad song on here. Best grunge album of 1992, 14/35 in my yearly chart, and comes in at 90 on my decade chart.

There's a few great albums here Jameth...let's go with Mr Bungle.

Thrashing In The Pool! ( Throw 'em a life vest!)

By Inheritance by Artillery

Some albums transcend their genre. BUT let's be honest, most don't. In 1990, thrash was already on the wane and there is a good reason this thrash LP from Denmark sunk without a trace at the time. It didn't elevate the game. It didn't get you to turn around. Is it good? Yes. Is it on the level of the other thrash benchmarks of 1990 namely Seasons Of The Abyss and Rust In Peace? Not even close. If you love thrash and you miss that late 80s sound, this is certainly competent. But anyone outside of thrash diehards is most likely not going to understand what all the fuss is about. And that includes me.

Grade: B-. Good Thrash.

Now here's an album that does transcend...

This is really good, and I'm mad that I've never listened to this band before. Going to have to put a couple of their albums in the queue for sure, because this kind of Ethereal/Dream Pop stuff is some good stuff. I'm also a sucker for that lo fi sound that you can only get on a bedroom recorded cassette, which is mostly what this is, as it states it's some early projects from this band.

Tilly, I'd probably give Artillery at least B+, because that first song shreds so much. Anyways, Entombed would be next choice. Pretty statanic ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

California by Mr. Bungle

Hell to the yea yea!

I had planned on saving Mr. Bungle until after I had gone through Zappa, Beefheart, The Residents, and some others; so I don't know of any precedents for California. There could be, but I feel like these guys just had an idea to do a surf-themed album, and blazed it through their alternative lens. And after listening to their first two albums, it's also hard to say whether they reigned in their experimentation to achieve a more direct approach, or if they've simply tabled it in favor of a more cohesive environment. Either way, I don't care, because the approach works and the environment is spectacular. I'm also blown away by their musicianship. It isn't on display on California as much as it was on Disco Volante, but they still pack in as much as they can within a surf rock framework.
