Chelsea Girl by Nico

Before this I had listened to Desertshore and tried listening to The Marble Index, and I found both of them kind of unlistenable because of how experimental they were. This one (mostly) leans closer to traditional pop, which is probably why Nico dislikes it. I found it really enjoyable, as it reminded me a lot of Leonard Cohen's first few albums. It kind of lost me in the middle with the 8 minute "It Was a Pleasure Then," which sounded much more like the experimental Nico I didn't enjoy. But that was a bit of an outlier and I'd say I liked this overall.

Chief, listen to Pale Awakening. I don't know what it is but it sounds like a folky black metal album.

Sorry for causing a stir with that Carly Rae Jepsen review and then disappearing heh. Didn't have much time to listen to music the past week.

Celebration Rock by Japandroids
It's pretty good. Power pop with great hooks and decent lyrics. What I definitely didn't like was the excessive use of "whoo"s, "oo"s and similar. It sounded childish and irritating. Apart from that, liked it a lot. The firework sounds which start and end the album were a nice touch, cause the whole thing sounds like a celebration album (if you ignore the lyrics). One of the better pop punk albums I've heard in the 10s. 7.5/10

Out of the Blue is a good ELO record, although not their best

Miles Smiles by Miles Davis Quintet

Technically, this album is impeccable. I can see why it's hailed as a classic of jazz. It's also a very enjoyable album. However, in terms of personal taste, my absolute favorite records in jazz tend to be albums that go hard throughout. Coming in a distant second are cool jazz albums that are placid throughout. This is in the midrange for the most part, which is not generally my aesthetic preference. My favorite track is the finale, as it has the most energy. 3.5/5.

2. I love Flying Lotus, and this album is no exception:

Pale Awakening by The Frozen Autumn

Sounds like this should habe been released in 1985 and not 1995, but that's ok. It's a Gothic Rock/ Darkwave thing that mixes in some elements of Dream Pop.It ended up being a lot better than I thought it would be, but in 1995, this sound would've been dated.

Smif N Wessun for sure.

Dah Shinin' by Smif-N-Wessun

Nothing too new here for my ears, just well-made east coast 90s boom bap. It's a pretty hardcore album that also goes down very smooth. Strong production. The main thing holding this record back from greatness is the homophobia, which is more frequent and intense than most of their peers. 3.5/5.

Don't Come Home A Drinkin' (With Lovin' On Your Mind) by Loretta Lynn

Hmm, the ballad of a woman who stands up against abusive red neck douche bags. I suppose in some ways I like the sound of that in theory, especially if it didn't sound like Stockholm syndrome at play, in which it creeps the shit out of me. This record does that latter. I kind of wish it was a real slam on them. She does have a nice voice though. 2.5/70.

All Right by Himiko Kikuchi

The other album was not available in full, so I went with the next one. Another fusion of jazz/funk from Japan by Himiko Kikuchi. She's a piano player that I've listened to before, and this album is just as good as the last one. Even got a little bit proggy at times. Anyways, I continue to fill my 80s Japanese album listening log to the brim.

I have never listened to that Youngbloods album, but I'll give it a shot too.

This was the only song worth anything on the album, and it was only OK. I thought that Youngbloods album was good, but in 1969 it gets lost in the mix.

Odessa by Bee Gees

Yeah - I remember this being quite the musical journey. I was expecting something in the disco mood (when I first heard it and was surprised), but this is more a prog pop album (if there is a thing) - officially baroque pop via RYM. As good as the arrangements are (and quite a few were indeed great), I left feeling bland and I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm actually glad they went the disco route. 3/75.
