Frenetic 80s art punk updated for the early 90s with a hint of video game music. This is Susumu Hirasawa's band; an artist who I enjoy. It was good, but not great. Their stuff in the 80s is better.
I'm not even going to talk about your last comment, let's just move on to the next one, which will be Tim Buckley. 😁

I couldn't find this album on spotify or youtube so I had to listen to it song by song on you tube but it was well and truly worth the effort. Very unique music, at least to me, maybe not to Romanian Gypsies. A variety of instruments seem to be used, but mainly violin, piano accordion and double bass(?). There was a great song with a piccolo(?) I think. There was a great tempo throughout, some feel good music, seemingly complicated rhythms, and fantastic, amazing, technical musicianship (an advantage to watching the videos, some of which showed their performances). I give this a high 8/10, and put it in my top 10 for 1999 at 7/50.
Could someone please explain what he is doing here to make that great sound, at the start of the video and again a couple of minutes into it? (One of the best songs from the album imo).

SLOWcore is definitely an appropriate genre for these fellows. Song lurch along at a snails pace, but it's a good pace, and I thought it was decent and on par with similar-sounding bands in the genre.
I used to have New Ancient Strings on my own overall chart. Beautiful album.

babyBlueSedan also recommended this in the Black History Month thread, so two birds with one stone. This is a unique and creative album, weaving together fractured songs (r&b, hip hop, jazz) and spoken words into a sound collage. It's well-made and fascinating, but it's also not very satisfying, at least on first listen. Maybe that will change with future listens as I settle into an unsettling sonic landscape. 3.5/5.

Purple, thanks for posting those! The album was available to me on Apple Music. But, it’s a compilation, so you should be able to find the tracks scattered throughout their 90s discography on Spotify next time you want to listen.
In the first video, I’m guessing he’s using a spare bowstring or violin string to draw across the strings for that effect.
In the second video, I’m guessing you’re talking about the cymbalum being played in the back with sticks. It’s a string instrument related to the hammered dulcimer and perhaps the zither (?).
And yeah, the tempos used and the overall musicianship are bebop level...absolutely incredible. Glad you liked it! _________________ Can you play free, or in three, or agree to try something new?
I guess you'd call this Psychedelic Dub? Pretty cool, although not much stood out to me immediately, I did enjoy the album quite a bit. More will probably be revealed on further listens.

I second Jameth. The Dead Can Dance have some cool instrumentation like this on a track called Rakim. First minute and a half it's a bit of a solo of it, and then really takes off after that with some killer vocals (imo) for both the male and female parts.
Wow. I've heard this was good and kind of thought to myself, oh yeah, ok sure. But no, if you haven't heard this yet, totally worth taking a look. Easily on the Astral Weeks plane.... Before I made a fool of myself with Odessa, I actually was afraid I would hate this and be mocked for it, but with how many stupid comments I make on the internet, I clearly don't care. Luckily this album proved me wrong and it's a fantastic 90/4.5.

You're Dead! by Flying Lotus
This one just reminded me how much I love FlyLo. Cosmogramma and Until The Quiet Comes were due another listen, and after the disappointment that was Flamagra I forgot how great they are. You're Dead! is not too shabby either, I'd even say it's tied with Cosmogramma. One of them has to end up on 2010s chart. Loved the jazz/fusion/funky feel, it was my favourite genre blend of any FlyLo album, and the only negative is that there were 2-3 slightly weaker songs. But it may still be his best. 8.5/10

This was the first ELO album I've heard. I knew a couple of their songs before this - Don't Let Me Down and Mr. Blue Sky - but those are pop songs and I'd heard ELO was a prog band. This album seems to fuse the two genres together, with a lot of catchy hooks mixed in with some proggy strings and keys. I didn't realize this was a double album, and early on it reminded me of Rundgren's Something/Anything since it was basically a series of really solid but not transcendent pop songs. As it went on it showed it's prog side a bit more, and I think the last quarter or so was my least favorite part of the album. Definitely worth a listen though, even if I'm not a huge fan of this style of rock.
Great R&B album that's a little uneven, but it has a few really great songs that make up for it.

It may be more appropriate to describe this album as themed rather than a concept album, but an alternative/indie concept album is a rare occurrence, so props to Ween. The nautical theme provides a lot of space for exploration, and they take full advantage with a slew of mismatch tracks that are nicely cohesive on the whole. My only complaint with this album is that it is a little uneven with some less palatable tracks. But, this was definitely good enough to get me sniffing around their other albums.
