Some nice ambient techno. Something I have very little experience with but from what I can tell I think this is really good. It was quite melodic, had my head bopping at times, I got lost in the music at times, it mostly maintained my interest, had a nice clean sound, interesting world and new age samples/sounds at times.I got an aquatic feeling at times, and at other times, with sounds of nature effectively used, it brought to mind peaceful forests and other types of natural environments. So peaceful I could sleep to this too...in fact I did and had to re-listen to the second half...but the peacefulness is in the atmosphere created, the music is quite lively for most of it. Surprisingly I really got into this. 7.5/10, and 22/41 for 1995.

NTS Sessions 1-4 by Autechre
It's just the 2nd Session, not the whole compilation, but that's not how things work on BEA. Whatever. Wanted to give it a slightly lower score, but the last track "turbile epic casual, stpl idle" was immense. It's a lot to take in - I'm 2 listens in but that's not enough for a 2 hour album. I didn't enjoy every moment here, but it really is an experimental electronic journey. Its appeal will surely increase with future listens, but for now it's a "mostly good" rating. Who knows, one day maybe I'll tackle the full 4 part 8 hours Session. 7.5/10

I can generally only tolerate digital synth music in small doses, and these albums are always really long, for some reason. I also tend to prefer the experimental end of the spectrum when looking for electronic music (which I don't do nearly as much as I feel I should). But, as sugary as this album gets, it has enough happening that it distances itself, at least somewhat, from the other end. They also include enough analog instruments and elements to mellow the digital harsh. The tracks they seem to be going for comfort are what I enjoyed most; "Sept" and "International", in particular, especially "International". But, some other tracks passed me by like a Volvo, and overall I'm not sure how to feel about it. Part of me likes it, and then I feel like it's not my jam and there's electronic music for me to find that I would like better.

I would expect an album with an M.C. Escher cover would be awesome. Unfortunately it was only ok. Pretty standard rock album here - nothing bad, but nothing great. So I guess I'll give it a high score of 3.5/80, but easily could drop from there.

This was probably the album on my list that I was most excited to hear, but I found it really disappointing. Brown himself is great here. He has tons of energy and his vocals are fantastic - some of the best, if not the best, soul vocals I've heard. Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy the music here as much. Maybe the recording doesn't capture the full energy of the performance? Even ignoring that though there are a few slower tracks that are just a grind to listen to, especially the 10 minute one near the end. This isn't really the type of soul music I prefer - I like a sound with more groove and funk than something with this many horns - so that also probably contributed. I see that Brown has a few other live albums that are more indebted to funk so I may check those out, but I don't think I'll be coming back to this one.
Still haven't heard any of those, so I'll choose the one from a band I'm familiar with. Hope it's better than my last pick.

Enjoyable late-night techno that will definitely be stuck in my head for a couple of days. Most tracks are repetitive, but not stale in any way, while the sound palette was fairly large compared to the last couple of techno releases that I'd listened to. I think this guy is much more a singles kind of producer, but I figured that I would give one of his albums a try. RYM actually has it listed under "Wonky Techno" which I do think works for a couple of tracks.
Babyblue, I would go for Donald Fagen next. I don't know what you're opinions of Steely Dan are, but it's as polished as pop albums tend to get at this time.

I hope he had like 10 pairs of those pants - leather and performing in them for a couple years... nummy - I bet those smelled fresh. Or maybe he wore them once and that picture was just his favorite (opposite turns out to be true when I read up on this wondering what the difference was between this and the Hollywood Bowl show - at which he wore the same belt and pants)... Anyway, enough about the pants. I couldn't help but remembering douche bag Steve saying something like Robby Krieger can't play guitar. I was indeed wishing he was better/could've done something cooler with Alabama Song, etc. Anyway, this also greatly reminds of them not having a bass guitarist, rather Ray is a freaking genius. You can better hear it live (in the studio they often did bring in a bass guitarist). Anyway this band (imo) rightfully is at the forefront of western culture. Lately I haven't been liking live records, but this one did fine. 4.5/90.
