Up until a couple years ago I thought I didn't care for jazz, but then I discovered spiritual jazz and afro-jazz and found a few jazz albums I really love. This one is outside of my normal jazz wheelhouse, but I enjoyed it more than most of the Miles Davis and early John Coltrane albums I've heard. "Moanin'" is probably the best song here, but they all have great melodies. Still not sure this kind of jazz will ever be more than background music for me, but it was a pleasant listen.
There are a couple longtime favorites on this list, but I'm going to give you this relatively new find that has a couple of my favorite Bill Callahan songs.

Whoo! I think this is my new favorite ambient album. After what felt like five minutes, I checked to see where I was in the album, only to realize I was already halfway through. I guess that's the sign of really good music...it blazes by at supersonic speed, and you wish it would go on longer. I think the more aggressive (than what I'm used to hearing from the genre) sound palette has a lot to do with that (although, the much more subdued Harmony In Ultraviolet is currently playing the same trick on me). The live instrumentation was a great choice and really helps to humanize the music and provide the "painterly form of musical abstraction" Hecker says he was striving for on this album. Hecker also says there were compositional choices made, which never drew my attention, although I did notice at least some tracks had a distinct time signature, which was interesting. Anyways, this is a fantastic album for careening through metaphysical spaces and prospecting for moods.

This was a little better than I thought it would be. That bandwagon of "psychedelic" music many tried to jump on... idk there's few who did it right imo. I think these guys actually did alright... way more interesting to listen to than early Pink Floyd... I'll just say it that way (which isn't saying much since I'm not an early Pink Floyd fan). Anyway, the arrangements, story telling, creativity, etc. were intriguing. Worth a listen. 3.5/80 (could see it going to a 4).

This was the album on my list I was least looking forward to hearing. Pour Some Sugar On Me is on the short list for worst song I've ever heard. I figured I'd pop this on and get it over quick, only to find out that it's over an hour long! Yeesh. There's actually a part of me that thinks this is kind of catchy and that if I heard one of these songs at the right moment they'd sound awesome. Maybe drunk at a concert while waiting for a better band to take the stage? For casual listening this is just a slog. All of these songs are one trick ponies and follow the same pattern of verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge/solo-multiple choruses. They all go on for far too long. The hooks aren't terrible, so if you cut off the last couple minutes of every song and shortened the album by ~25 minutes it might be enjoyable. But even then you'd have to deal with some of the worst, least subtle vocals I've heard and production that makes this sound way too flat and loud. This album hurt my ears more than noise rock does. The most interesting part of this was finding out that a couple tracks, like Animal and the title track, are basically just 80's pop songs. They're bad 80's pop songs, but that fact was still more interesting than any of the actual music here.
Finish up the 60's with whatever this is. It's going to be a while until there are albums on your list that I've heard, but there are two coming up that are two of my favorite albums of the 70's.

This is the album I think Unhalfbricking was trying to be, but this is much, much better. It's got a bit of a trouvere feel to it, to be honest. While I liked it quite a bit more, overall, I'm not sure I can award it the 4/85 it likely deserves and probably will get a split rating of a 82.5/3.75.
2. I suppose take a stab at this: Wincing the Night Away by The Shins. I remember when The Shins first came out they reminded me of the late The Beach Boys a little. Maybe you hate them, idk. I don't find them a top 50 artist of mine, but they aren't bad either.

This is the first Smog album I've heard. A lo-fi singer/songwriter with cool, emotional vocals. A little bit slow core for my tastes, but their are some idiosyncracies, and variety that kept me interested, I appreciated the atmosphere created, and the earnest lyrics. I wonder if I would like one of his other albums more if I related to the lyrics more, which I didn't really do here. Glad I've listened to one of his albums now and I wouldn't shy away from hearing more, especially seeing as there are others rated higher, and I'm sure I've heard some Smog songs here and there that I've really liked. 7.5/19, and 32/44 for 1996.
I haven't heard any of these but I'm happy to give you Fela Kuti and have a listen myself.

The production is great. The vocals are too, and every song is well-made. However, I can't say I'm a huge fan of this style in general. And the at times violent/disturbing sexual lyrics are not really my jam. Overall though, this was well worth a listen. 3.5/5.
