This was good timing coming straight after the Billie Holiday album. They even shared a song on the tracklist. Some fantastic crooning here if that's your thing (personally I prefer the pop rock crooning of Roy Orbison in the '60s) and a great melancholic atmosphere was set from the selection of songs. Despite how great his voice is though I didn't believe him. Unlike Billie Holiday I don't feel he had been heartbroken and in pain when he recorded this. Musically though it was more bearable for me, staying mostly in the background and letting his voice be the predominant factor. Glad I've heard an album of his now, and I give it a 7/10, ranking it just above the Billie Holiday album.
This is the only one of these I've already heard so you're getting Natural Snow Buildings.

This is the 16th Bowie album I've heard, meaning he's broken his tie with Nick Cave and Sonic Youth and is now the artist I've heard the most albums by. I did a deep dive into Bowie's discography back when he died, but mostly focused on the albums I was curious to hear. I skipped this one since I figured he hadn't really developed his sound yet, and the fact that the album was retitled "Space Oddity" made me think they were trying to sell copies just from that hit. That hit is incredible by the way, it really feels like Bowie came right out of the gate with the ideas that would make him such a great artist. Well, lyrically at least. Musically the song is kind of run of the mill pop rock for the time, and that's even more true about the rest of the material here. It all has a kind of celestial feel, for lack of a better word, that hints at the production of albums like Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust. But it kind of jumps around in style as well; "Unwashed an Somewhat Slightly Dazed" sounds like a Bob Dylan song and "Janine" is almost a country tune, while the rest feels a lot more distinctly British. It's almost like that run of tracks on Hunky Dory that pays tribute to other artists, only less of a tribute and more of a copy, if that makes sense. "Cygnet Committee" even finds him rattling off of the names of famous rock songs (one of the songs he mentions is "Desolation Row," which made me think that in a way this was the "Murder Most Foul" of its day). The rest is a bit more focused, I liked "God Knows I'm Good" a lot as it had kind of a theatrical feel to it, but there's nothing nearly as good as the kind-of-title track. I think by assumption was basically correct: listen to this if you're a die hard, or out of curiosity, but don't expect it to be a crucial part of his catalog.
I've been trying to get into blues for a couple years and haven't really been able to, but this is the one blues album I listened to that I really enjoyed.

What a great album! Considering how much modern music I love is influenced by the blues I'm not surprised I enjoyed this. It is probably the best blues album from this era I've listened to...not that there is that many I've listened to to compare. Full of heart and passion, great music, and fantastic vocal performances. Smokestack Lightnin' may be the classic from this compilation, and yes it was a highlight, but I'm Leavin You was my favourite, with All Night Boogie, the title track, and Moanin' For My Baby also standing out. 8.5/10

I think if this group did a tour with Lightning Bolt, then the world might actually come to an end. It's one of those things that is obviously unique (the genre being called Cybergrind for crying out loud) but I don't know if I'm ever going to purposefully listen to it again. Probably going to give their second album a shot, because it's rated a little higher on RYM. I wouldn't reccomend this, but to the more masochistic of listeners.

I have a post saved in Notepad++, since the 123 structure is always the same. I just make sure to add/remove albums from the list. Saves a whole lotta copy/paste time too, would recommend ๐ _________________ Overall chart Fake overall chart
