People are talking about Betty, Peace, etc... and, well, the album in general, but August is an insanely strong track (Tswift or not). It sounds like something straight out of Sarah Records, or a Cocteau Twins track, or maybe even Mazzy Star. Like, it's really good. I'm legit impressed with this record in general, but that track might even be one of my favourites of the year.
I still wish the record was considerably more lo-fi, and there's still some slack to cut, but it's still hitting way above my expectations.
This is probably one of the best hip-hop albums of the year in a year with a lot of good hip-hop. Apollo Brown's been a fav of mine since Dreams, but I don't think he's struck such a strong collaboration before. This isn't one to miss.
This was a great rec, thank you for this. I haven't really listened to Apollo Brown yet and I've never heard of Che Noir, but they were fantastic together. Apollo's production shines and Che's verses are incredible. Definitely shooting towards the top of my 2020 chart for sure.
And of course Folklore was an incredibly pleasant surprise. Maybe it's because my expectations weren't too high (and maybe that's because I didn't realize that A Dessner helped write and produce), but it really blew me away. Similar vibes to Melodrama and Norman Fucking Rockwell. Jack Antonoff's touch is noticeable, even though he isn't involved with all of Folklore.
Anyone else listening to this album? I know it came out last week, but haven't heard much on it. I've been spinning it a lot, really in love with the album. The Beths' lyrics on here are so smart and clever. Surprised Pitchfork bashed it. Anyone else have thoughts on it?
Found out about this album on Friday when Jenn Wasner posted about producing the album, dropping this and Wye Oak in the same day! Seriously, what a year for Jenn Wasner. This album is killer. Alternative/Dream Pop album, really incredible songwriting and production. Critics are starting to talk about it. Pitchfork gave it a solid review and NPR put it on their Best of July list. Worth the listen for sure, in my top of the year.

The Microphones' new album is streaming now on YouTube. It's everything I hoped it would be, and maybe even more. I highly recommend watching the video along with the song, they really work well together. Definitely teared up at one point...
Now Only is my favorite Elverum project so I can't really say it's "his best since X" and make it seem hyperbolic, but I think anyone who likes The Glow Pt. 2 and Mount Eerie will like this a lot.

Sounds much more metal, which makes sense since Scott Ian of Anthrax and Dave Lombardo of Slayer are in the lineup. Not as adventurous as they usually are, but the song is fire. _________________ Overall chart Fake overall chart
Thoughts on the new Sufjan song? I like it a lot. It's a fairly standard synth-pop song musically and I think the lyrics are maybe a bit corny, but it's super catchy and Sufjan's vocals sound great over it. I will gladly take an album of slightly introspective but not overly serious songs like this.

Jacob Collier's Djesse Vol. 3 is out today. Collier hasn't gained much traction on this website, but he's absolutely one we should all be talking about. He's finally breaking through to real mainstream attention, and the kid is a genius. He's actively redefining and pushing the boundaries of western music theory, famously creating new key signatures (G half-sharp) and new time signatures (5/4/4) using his unworldly perfect pitch and rhythm. He's using a lot of negative harmony in this, which is a new concept of flipping the major scale and using the inversion for new harmonic lines. The album is stellar, maybe my favorite of the Djesse series so far.
