Why do I find it so average/mediocre in comparison to other R&B-classics at the time?

whatever

Hey that’s the album with that long ass song which should’ve been a quarter of its length.

And btw I disagree DD, it’s easily one of the best soul albums of all time. But it is a hit or miss maximalist sound, some people just don’t dig it.

Back in 2001 to 2003, Hot Buttered Soul was #57 on Joe S. Harrington’s Top 100 Albums. On the Billboard charts, it was the third-highest charting album on Harrington’s list at #8, bettered only by Machine Head at #7 and Beggar’s Banquet at #5.

I did have one listen a long time ago but never grasped what Harrington saw as so good about the album.
