Well I listened. It was well made. Good musicians . Don't really like the music, however. The drum sound is something that sounds, to me, quite lifeless. The big walls of "sludge" are consistently... well, heavy, sure, but not impactful. The whole album kinda rolls along with these big post rock epic moments and as you all may know I'm not a big fan of this style of post rock that is on display here. It doesn't feel like it has any heart at least it doesn't capture me or my imagination particularly well. I have come to the conclusion that the mix of so called Post Metal and atmospheric sludge is not my thing, at least not the way these chaps do it.
RYM metal of any kind since 1995 (expanded by 1 year and now voila! we have dissection, Blind Guardian and Suffocation!) top albums not heard or vague on. 1 album per artist and here we go. (no Death or Morbid Angel or Neurosis due to another thing i'm doing on my diary.)
1. Still Life by Opeth/1999/RYM #23 metal album of all time (Yes Opeth's Time out has ended --yay! I have grown a little on Blackwater Park and this is same era and just a little earlier in their discog. Note: there are another 2 after this one waiting on the list excluded only due to one album rule lol. the love for this band is wild.)
2. Storm of the Light's Bane by Dissection/1995/RYM #31 metal album of all time (classic melodic black metal album I can't remember hearing.)
3. Close to a World Below by Immolation/2000/RYM #41 metal album of all time (okay, now that a spot has freed up, this brand new listen of this classic DM album is now a possible Nom)
4. Crack the Skye by Mastodon/2009/RYM #43 metal album since '96 (love their previous 2 albums before this one but always borderline hated this one. need to listen again before finally closing this book.)
5. Those Once Loyal by Bolt Thrower/2005/RYM #51 metal album of all time (really like to near-love their early stuff, never heard this latter-career peak album)
6. Imaginations From the Other Side by Blind Guardian/1995/RYM #80 metal album of all time (first power metal choice woohoo. i guess. I mean something about power metal just seems so corny, but maybe I will hear it differently after listening to this classic.)
7. Pierced From Within by Suffocation/1995/RYM #94 metal album of all time (another BRUTAL death metal album woohoo for real! I liked that None So Vile listen so maybe I'll dig this too.)
8. Paracletus by Deathspell Omega/2010/RYM #102 metal album of all time (this is the newest album we've come across in this game yet. New-ish Black metal that is quite liked.)
9. Diabolical Conquest by Incantation/1998/RYM #117 metal album of all time (some cool death metal/with a sub-genre of Death Doom metal. Interesting indeed. Oh and apparently LedZep loves these chaps' music. Wouldn't mind one bit this being chosen.)
10. Black Future by Vektor/2009/RYM #119 metal album of all time (kind of a new record, very tricky! Starting to work my way into albums released later then 2005 with now 3 distinctly different 2009 or 2010 albums. This is a badass thrash album which I heard or heard most of once during lunch and remember liking it before playing something else and never returning.) _________________ -Ryan
Aaliyah was a very talented vocalist, and her beautiful singing carries this album. It's not totally a one-woman show, however. The production is often very good, including some of the tracks that established Timbaland's reputation as one of the greats. And there are a few great songs, most notably the classic title track. But the record is hampered by factors beyond Aaliyah's control: its length, its pacing/sequencing, and (most damaging) its inconsistent songwriting. While these issues prevent One In A Million from being a great record, the excellent vocals and good production get it most of the way there, making her sophomore album quite a good listening experience despite its flaws. 3.5/5.

Probably would help if I could understand Spanish better. Not exactly what I was expecting. Not as weird or edgy as the title would suggest. In fact, a lot of it is just piano and voice, which was unexpected. Based off of the first track, I was expecting a lot more Latin instrumentation. Bit disappointing.
I'll always be happy to listen to Bad Brains. Been a long time since I've listened to anything off that album.

I'll always be happy to listen to Bad Brains. Been a long time since I've listened to anything off that album.
The mix that's currently on all streaming platforms and has been on all physical releases since 1991 is a botched remaster with "an altered track order, significantly different mixes and a speed increase of the master which results in a raising of the pitch by one-half step." So basically, they've been chipmunked.
I have now tried YouTube, scoured various corners of the internet, and downloaded multiple files titled "original mix." However, nothing I've found matches the track lengths of the original LP. The total length is always off by over a minute, which means at least some of these tracks are tainted. It's driving me up the wall, and as the original mix will finally be reissued this September, I'm going to wait for that and ask you for a different recommendation (or whoever posts a review next, if that happens first). I haven't listened to many film score albums and I'm still not sure how to approach them. So I find the many short pieces of music that often feel incomplete and snippets of songs a little bit off putting. However because this is from a movie I have seen, remember, and liked (a powerful movie with an incredible acting performance from Ellen Burstyn), it brought back memories and emotions from that movie, even if I didn't recall any specific scenes from a specific piece of music. I liked the mix of electronic compositions with a string quartet (I'm always happy to hear some more Kronos Quartet), and as the album went on I started to enjoy the familiarity of the leitmotif, which came to a climax on the impressive Lux Aeterna just before the end of the album. The last third of the album was the most interesting, as the increasing tension, insanity, and confusion was portrayed well. To finish, I feel like a bit of an idiot as I knew Clint Mansell had made a few movie scores, but until now I never realised it was the Clint Mansell from PWEI, a band I used to love back in the day, and got to see live twice. Glad I got to listen to this. 7/10, and 50/69 for 2000.

FWIW the 1991 mix was done by Bad Brains' bassist and producer Ric Ocacek. My understanding is that the altered track order is intentional but the speed increase is not intentional.
It's the Ramones. They're live. I sorta knew what I was getting into before I put this on. It's great. Ramones sail through their greatest songs (circa late 1970s) at blazing speed, shredding on all their instruments, with no perceptible difference to Joey's voice between studio and live (other than singing slightly faster on many of the songs). It's a great set. If you like the Ramones, it's well worth listening to. Interestingly I found myself a little underwhelmed by some old favorites like "Blitzkrieg Bop" or "Pinhead" then found myself really enjoying a few songs that I have never enjoyed this much: "Cretin Hop", "Do You Wanna Dance?", "Judy Is a Punk". Oh and "Surfin' Bird" in the middle cracked me up, I definitely wasn't expecting that. It fits in perfectly with the Ramones' unique blend of surf punk. I don't know that I've ever heard any album where any band member yells "one, two, three, four" on nearly every song (seriously felt like it was 90% of the tracks...). Fun album overall, but I much prefer the studio versions of the songs for the most part. 3.5/5

Purplepash please listen to Olivia Tremor Control. To my knowledge, none of the tracks on that collection showed up in any of their studio albums, so this set is well worth listening to. Though honestly I don't recall if I've heard the whole thing, but certainly a majority of the tracks.

It's unusual for a debut album to be devoted to covers of one artist, but that's what Polish jazz group EABS do with their first release for Astigmatic Records. And as the second half of that sentence indicates, it actually makes perfect sense. They are a talented combo making what I assume are interesting updates to the source material. But I can't say for sure, because I haven't actually heard any of the originals, as none of the music here is from the album Astigmatic (my sole experience with Mr. Komeda). The more energetic tracks are in general better than the mellower tracks, but instrumentally it's all good stuff. The main drawback is that the rapping on a couple tracks is bad, and the singing is inessential. This should have been all instrumental. Repetitions touches greatness several times, and rarely strays too far. Took some time to decide, but I'm starting it at a high 3.5/5.

Some really solid post rock and post metal. Reminded me of Mono at times, although the violins aren't the focal point as much. It's also heavier than most Mono work I've heard and has some doom metal in it as well. The vocals weren't anything special and it was all in Finnish even though they're a Russian band currently residing in Ukraine (?), but they didn't really detract from the music. There's some black metal style vocals as well as a lot of cleans. And the music got quite epic at times, while being gentle and beautiful at others. This is often the case with post rock, but here it's even more emphasized because the heavier parts are influenced by metal. What I didn't hear nearly enough here is the tempo changes. The heavier parts were just as slow as the quieter parts, which made the whole album seem a bit static. GYBE do that really well and it's a big reason why I love their music. Despite that it's an original mix of styles backed by solid songwriting. 8/10

Good thing I got back in the game just in time to pick from my own chart heh. Go with Porto Morto, for my money one of the best Croatian albums of the last 20 years, very good stuff. Free on Bandcamp too. Jazzy, electronic art rock and progressive pop with loads of instruments and sounds. The lyrics aren't that important (mostly humorous and/or nonsensical), so you can enjoy the album without understanding the language.
Also their videos are excellent, the recent ones are better but this one from the debut is fun as well. "Ručak u podne" means "Lunch at noon", the video is based on the line "baš su fine ove stvari" ("these things are just delicious"), where the word "things" is taken quite literally. I'm sure there's a critique of modern society somewhere in there.
