My discoveries per year

Well! Here I would like to start with my own long term project taking advantage of the best BEA has to offer: overall charts from people who are as interested in music as I am. I already have year charts which are based on the albums I already own or know, but there are a lot of them which I haven't listened to yet and which might be worth discovering. I'd like to do this by going through the overall BEA top lists per year starting in 1963 which is both my year of birth and the year in which I personally think rock music started to become interesting. To keep it a bit varied I will skip through the years in five year periods, ie starting in 1963 then 1968 then 1973 all the way to 2013 and then back to 1964 and so on. Every year I will start with some stats of my personal chart in comparison to the overall year charts, both top 20 an top 50 and will start to listen to at least the top 20 albums I don't know and I'll hope to give some comments sometimes very short, sometimes a bit longer. I will also update my personal year charts accordingly. In principle I will use Apple Music to listen to the albums, which I suppose will cover most of the field. If a certain album isn't present in Apple Music, I'll have to skip it. I will try to listen to all the albums at least once and sometimes twice if I doubt, but I'll skip the really stupid ones (ex a Xmas compilation in 1963) and also other compilations, classical music, jazz and easy listening. This will be a long term project which means there might be times in which I will stop a bit of course because I don't want be stuck listining to albums of the same year all the time. However I suppose this will take at least a month per year. I will try to keep it up but please don't be mad if I give up (maybe already after the first year :lol: )

North by Elvis Costello
Am I the only person in the world who thinks this album is a masterpiece. This is Elvis Costello at his most orchestral but also at his most emotional and most jazzy. But these songs are so nicely crafter that I can only hear them in awe. Still is by far my personal favorite but also Someone Took The Words Away takes my breath away. What a wonderful album that takes back its rightful first place (from the 5th).

Kimi-Ga-Suki by Matthew Sweet
An album released in Japan only so I listened to it on Youtube. Not a bad album but not his best entering at the 35th rank.

People Are Like Seasons by Sophia
If this album would have been restricted to the slower songs, it would have been a masterpiece. The quality of the harder songs just drags the album down a little. But there are a few killer tracks here that belong to my absolute favorite tracks ever with Swept Back and especially I Left You. This latter song is just heart-breaking: it begins with a very simple piano motif and the way the song develops over a few minutes in a soaring ballad which never fails to nearly bring me to tears is awesome. Maybe some people would find it to be over the top but for me it just hits all the right strings. And of course that's not all: also Oh My Love, Fool and Desert Song No 2 are great and it's only less focused tracks like Holidays Are Nice Darkness which causes this to be only a near-perfect album. It remains firmly at the 3rd rank of the year.

Lionheart by Saxon

Carpe Diem by Saxon
Lionheart was already an album deep in the career of Saxon and came after lots of ups (their first albums) and downs (most of the albums that came just before this). But this one was the old Saxon again with much more grit than before. Of course there isn't anything really new here and there's no track which stands out but it's overall a good album that lands at the 23rd rank of 2004.
And about the same can be said about their newest album which was just released. But in general it's better than Lionheart. It's more focused, it's a bit harder and it's got better guitars and better songs. But again not a real highlight. Of course the year is still too young to see where it will land but it will not be at the lower part.

X&Y by Coldplay
Coldplay got really big with this album but popularity is not always the synonym of sell-out or bad. The songs all feel very lush and expansive but every single track of this beautiful album has something special and the most special track is Fix You which is still one of my favorite songs ever. The way this song explodes from a very calm beginning to its wide open chorus is just fantastic. And all other tracks are also very much ok so this album rightfully remains at the first rank of this year.

Wait Long By The River And The Bodies Of Your Enemies Will Float By by The Drones
I already discovered two Drones albums in these rounds and especially adored I See Seaweed. And this album with its weird but very fitting title is again top notch. Sometimes it's slow burning blues, sometimes it's heavy load rock but the deranged singing and the loud guitars make this a special experience from these cowboys from Perth. And in a way they even hit some hard nails with their subjects on alcoholism, loneliness, love sickness, aso. I'm glad I discovered this band and this album makes its way immediately to the 6th rank of the year.

Eyes Open by Snow Patrol
This album has not been made to be an aggressive statement about the state of the world. No, it's an album that just describes the world in soft tones and there's nothing wrong with that because it really delivers with some great tracks like Set The Fire To The Third Bar (together with Martha Wainwright) and Open Your Eyes. It remains the great album it has always been and remains at the 4th rank of the year.

Antidepressant by Lloyd Cole
Lloyd Cole is certainly not a has-been here. Of course he was never gonna make a classic like Rattlesnakes again but this album is also very good. Subtle is the best word to describe it but subtle in the best way possible: there is not a bad song here. So no wonder it ends up at the 13th rank of the year.

Beyond by Dinosaur Jr.
Dinosaur Jr's third life after a ten year hiatus and Lou Barlow is back. When I first listened to this album it completely blew me away and this is still the case now. This is already clear in the first second of the first track, Almost Ready, which starts in a very electric way.
This album reminds me a bit of Where You Been, their best of their second period but this one is so much better, something I wouldn't have imagined 20 years ago. I'm a big fan of Lou Barlow but in general his contributions get a bit snowed under under the Dinosaur Jr umbrella, but here Back To Your Heart is one of the many highlights. This the best album of the band and to me a real classic. And of course remains firmly at the first rank of the year as well.

All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone by Explosions In The Sky
I already said I'm a bit fed up with postrock and this must be one of the most typical examples: first it's completely instrumental and of course there is the constant change in dynamics from very soft and piano driven to well yes, explosions and outbursts of electric guitar storms, but it's all so stale and in essence without variation. All tracks seem to be the same. So not really my thing.

Motorizer by Motörhead
I've already said many times that I still need to hear a bad Motörhead album but this one is definitely one of their least inspired. The songs are not bad but none of them rise above the ordinary. Just an ok Motörhead album which goes from the 11th to the 13th rank.

Havilah by The Drones
S I thought why not thrown in another Drones album because I liked their first ones so much. Well here they go a bit more soft than on their first badass albums. Of course they still sound a bit badass but in a way the way they do it here falls a bit flat for me. Overall I like it but just not so much as their others and it lands at the 38th rank of this year.

There Is No Enemy by Built To Spill
Maybe not their best album were it not for that last epic track: Tomorrow. But all in all a good one and it remains at the 2nd rank of the year.

The Incident by Porcupine Tree
A concept album around "incidents": maybe a bit strange but somehow it works and what's more I like the album (I mean the first concept half) very much with the last track I Drive The Hearse as the highlight. I generally like PT except if they start to sound with that other band they are often compared with: DT (I mean self-indulgent prog metal whatever that means), best exemplified by that horrible track, Bonnie The Cat (on the second CD so no part of the concept album). But all in all an album I very much liked so I vote it up to rank 10 of my year list.

The Soft Pack by The Soft Pack
This is a really good rock album which deserves more love than it does now.

Broken Dreams Club by Girls
This album is a bit too poppy for my taste from a band of which I like some of their albums.

What Did You Expect From The Vaccines? by The Vaccines
Maybe not so good as I originally ranked it but still a great catchy record which goes from the 5th to the 14th rank.

Through A Crooked Sun by Rich Robinson
This was the first solo record from one of the brothers after the demise of The Black Crowes and it surprised me in a positive way. This album not only features good guitars as could be expected but also really fine songs. It immediately enters at the 16th rank.

Tough Love by Pulled Apart By Horses
This album is very punky but at the same time it has a lot of staying value. It features great tracks like Shake Off The Curse, Epic Myth, Bromance ain't Dead and Degeneration Game. One of those many underestimated albums and it goes from the 5th to the 6th rank of the year.

Swearin' by Swearin'
Just a good punky album, nothing more nothing less and enters at the 16th rank.
