That Espresso song is like the whitest thing I heard in 2024, and it's overplayed, predictably. My vote goes to Mutations.

there's something unexpectedly similar about these two despite existing in completely different worlds. sort of a similar sense of motion if that makes any sense? idk, I don't love either, don't hate them either but think I'm gonna go no-vote

It's a disco song (a genre mostly invented by Black people) that uses AAVE in the lyrics. A large portion of White America reacted to it being a hit with "why does she say 'that's that' instead of using proper grammar?"

Both songs are lowkey great. Sure, they're both some of the most predictable and polished pieces of (indie) pop you've ever heard, but they both embrace their aesthetics and make the most of them. I've heard Espresso multiple times and enjoyed it, but Mutations has captured me on the very first listen. Not sure which way I'll vote.

None of the disco elements in the song are reminiscent of the black roots (to that standard all music is black), it's too processed and artificial. And it's also even trite by today's retro-disco level, the revival died four years ago (it sounds like a poor man's Say So by Doja Cat). I wasn't really bothered or that aware of the AAVE line, because it's pretty minimal.

It's been easier for awhile to avoid excessively hearing the most popular songs, but doing deliveries in Florida I couldn't go a few hours without hearing the "Espresso" beat coming from... somewhere. That said, while the beat itself is nothing new (in fact it seems like something coming out of the Soundcloud future Funk/chillwave vibe of the early 10s, but much more expensive and polished) I do like the way her voice is pretty seamlessly integrated with it though, that smoothly surfing-the-beat feel. It's a solid bop even with some easy criticisms and replay overkill. "Mutations" is probably the last one I would've chosen from Nilufer's last album, mainly in that it seems like a leftover from her previous album, but still well-crafted if not a whole lot more than that. Might actually go for the Pop tune after all ๐Ÿค”

My point is not that Espresso is somehow steeped in Black culture or anything, lol. It's that calling it the whitest thing of 2024 is a huge exaggeration. Sabrina Carpenter alone has multiple chart hits from 2024 that sound much whiter, like Please Please Please.
