My suggestion is mini tournaments that are much shorter and more manageable than the ones on here in the past. E.g. a maximum of 32 songs and 3 rounds. We could go with specific sub-genres/ niches for the theme. I’d like to do more lighthearted stuff like best power ballads, best song from a film, best Scandi pop song etc., though any suggestions welcome. Happy to trial something if there is any interest? |
I'd definitely participate

It's nice that they're safe here on BEA. I got banned on RYM once for simply playing the word association game. I simply played the game exactly as you're supposed to, posting the first word that came to my mind when I read the previous user's word, yet somehow RYM found a way to ban me for that. Very strange. I couldn't have made it up. |
interesting that RYM find them bad enough not to have them, probably have a lower tolerance than I have, but coming to the same conclusion that they are not good for the forums. How many word games do we need until they take over everything? beginning to feel there's no magic number above zero.

Agreed.
I joked recently that I was thinking of starting a next word that pops into your mind game, and how ridiculous that would have been.
Apparently, some would have actually played it. _________________ I'm leaning on the threshold

No, that's not what I meant. RYM did have a word association game thread. They had one a long time before I started playing the game. For some reason they didn't like the word I posted. I don't even remember what the word was, but it was just an ordinary word (nothing obscene). It was whatever first came to my mind when I read the user's word above my post. That's how the game is supposed to be played. How can someone be banned for posting just one (non-obscene) word?! When the ban was over, I asked them if I could be banned again in the future for simply playing the game the way it's supposed to be played. They said it was possible, so I stayed away from the word association game thread after that, though I've never figured out how or why I was banned for just posting a single word in a game thread.

There are plenty of words that are ordinary in isolation and not obscene, but that would be offensive to associate. If you really don't remember the words that got you banned, why should we assume it was unjustified? _________________ Join us in the canon game / Add me on RYM

You can assume whatever you want, but banning someone for posting a single (non-obscene) word on a game thread is ridiculous. Not only that, but there were a lot of obscenities posted on the boards on RYM, but no one was banned for posting them. Not only were they not banned, but RYM had no problem with obscenities being posted on their site at all, yet banned me for posting a single ordinary word on a game thread.

As someone who organized several tournaments, I would love to see them make a comeback. I'll say from experience, if you PM enough users as the organizer, you can go pretty far above the baseline level of forum activity.
It's definitely important to keep the structure and scale manageable, and ensure that you can follow through as the organizer. There's been several that tailed off into nothingness for those reasons.
For me personally, I'm much more likely to participate in an album tournament than a song tournament. First, this is an album site, and second, I can play the albums as an accompaniment to daily life and usually get a clear sense of which one I prefer. For a song tournament, I need to be much more focused and online the entire time for listening, comparing, and voting. _________________ Join us in the canon game / Add me on RYM

Yeah, agreed. The tournaments should make a comeback. They were the most interesting thing on the forums, imo. _________________ Overall chart

tournaments were why the Games forum was originally created, but has now been drowned by word games which don't really fit the site very well. Low engagement apart from the few that post in them (personally actively avoid them as find them a bit cringe), points harvesting whether true or not, but definitely low quality posts which are not really related to albums in the wider sense and crowding other stuff out that could appear here instead.
If we don't check the number of word games now, they could quite easily proliferate with no rules to govern them (4(?) plus threads already), so I think going forwards we should knock them on the head (disallow them), wait for the fall out and then continue with tournaments organised by whoever wants to do them (wish I had enough time, but got my hands full trying to keep the site going). Yes, hosting is expensive and certainly don't want to be paying to keep stuff going like that.
