How common is it among users to watch a Visualizer (computer generated visuals reflective of the music being played) while listening to music? Do you use them often? Only with specific genres?
Does anyone know how computers generate those images? Just curious.

I imagine it's some kind of code that creates patterns based on the wave forms of the file.
Really I don't see much use for it, I've only seen it on screen at parties to fill up the music select screen.

I've never heard of anyone getting into them, so I always assumed it was a gimmick. I have seen artists use them in concerts though.

My sister's ex used to put on a visualizer to the music during parties and I enjoyed glancing at it from time to time; he used whatever was built into the XBox 360. Honestly would enjoy having one on as I often listen to music through my television (through HDMI to my computer) while doing things around the house, when I don't have vinyl on. I couldn't actively watch one though unless I was tripping balls or it was interactive. Any recs for one are welcome though.

Don't ever use the iTunes visualiser. That shit is the most uninteresting thing I've ever seen integrated into an audio-visual representation. _________________

Which one? iTunes has a few, some horrible, but one of them I really enjoyed.

Haven't used one in years. Just to put it in perspective, the last time I used a visualizer was when I listened to Sgt Pepper's for the first time.
