A tie with Levithan as my favorite Mastodon album, and hotdamn what an album this is. One of the best metal albums I've ever heard.

Well, I will need to listen to this again sometime. Maybe when I'm back into metal somewhat. I thought it was cool when I heard it. Kind of all over th place. Creative, no doubt. Idk, metal of basically any kind is not my thing atm. I'm just too much a whispery, quiet, wimp I guess.

Not my favourite of theirs. I prefer the more in-your-face side of Mastodon to the melodic side they show here.

Totally. While Leviathan is more my style, this album''s twists & turns are just jaw dropping. I love how all their albums have their own personality and style. While it may be boring to say so, Mastodon is the easily best metal band of the last twenty years. And if you disagree, I want names! Laughing

Well, okay...

Agalloch
Amorphis
Arkona
Avantasia
Ayreon
Blind Guardian
The Devin Townsend Project
Heidevolk
Kamelot
Leprous
Maudlin of the Well
Ne Obliviscaris
Pain of Salvation
Opeth
Orphaned Land

Don't get me wrong, Mastodon was great until they decided to go for contemporary appeal and switch from progressive metal (CTS) and sludge metal (Leviathan, Blood Mountain, etc) to mediocre stoner rock. I have much respect for them as the band they used to be, but they don't have a candle to some of the more consistent or brilliant bands in the vague definition of "best metal in the last 2-3 decades".

As for Crack the Skye itself, it's a great album; probably one of progressive metal's finest releases. It's a shame it's the end of the road for Mastodon in terms of cohesiveness.

This, Mastodon are one of my favorite metal bands. My favorite song on this is the title track.
