'Tis not very good. I like their first 3 albums, can't much stomach the rest.

Here's the thing: For all the hate they get, Lulu and St. Anger are at least unique. Black through Reload, however, sound just like a thousand other rock albums that came out between them. There are a few decent songs there, but "Enter Sandman" is horrible, and almost everyone who loves this knows nothing about metal.
Sure beats Death Magnetic, though.

So like you?
But yeah The Black Album is kind of boring, it has some solid songs (Enter Sandman isn't one of them) but just feels a plodding bore.

This album would probably be looked upon a lot more favourably if not for the inevitable comparisons to their first three albums. It stands on it's own pretty well. _________________ 100 Punk Favourites

When Metallica turned into a full mainstream act. From that perspective, Enter Sandman is a decent attempt at a classic rock tune.
Not much for me there, though, and yes, the first three albums... _________________ Always shouts out something obscene

Honestly for most, this is either the beginning (you're crazy if it is) or the end of Metallica. I've always liked most of this album, but it doesn't even come close to touching the stuff before it. It's fine, though many of the songs have been seriously overplayed on whatever version of "[insert number here]ROCK-FM" radio stations across America. _________________ Progressive Rock

Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning are far and away my favorite Metallica albums, but I still can't get on board with the hate fore this album. No, it's not what they were, but it still has merit and despite it's commercial success relative to the earlier albums, it's still far from "mainstream."
