|
Ever since I first became obsessed with music in 2009, I've heard many stories of RYM or BEA users (from our own JackWC to TheCunningStunt) temporarily being "bored" of music nerddom. I never understood how that could happen to someone, but I currently worry that that may be happening with me.
I've been feeling strangely for the past few weeks, but I didn't know how to explain it to people without being a downer or curmudgeon. When I look at my new release calendar on RYM, I can't get myself any excitement towards what's coming out. I've listened to a few big releases (Bowie, Anderson .Paak) and several small ones, but they've almost been from a distance, where my mind and soul just didn't feel the obsessive euphoria it normally has gotten with new music.
I guess I started to feel this way this past summer when I was listening to almost nothing but modern classical, experimental music, and top 40 pop, but even then I was discovering so many amazing singles and world music comps that I hardly cared. But now I don't even feel like completing the RYM top 2000 singles, and I wonder whether I'm already getting to the age where I start being a musical fuddy-duddy that will soon think music stopped being good or something. (Needless to say, that terrifies me).
I definitely don't want to sound judgmental with this, but part of this could be that I find music to almost be a waste of time right now. This isn't a slight against anyone else here; I'm just trying to explain why I have trouble justifying time spent on music right now.I've been voraciously consuming movies for the past two months instead, and I guess I just feel like I get so much more intellectual and thematic content from them for the time spent (you could even say that they're more "Charlie-friendly", since my kind of social commentary on pop culture is a dime a dozen in the film world). Do you have any suggestions on how to get music to be intellectually invigorating again for me?
But this post isn't about me. I just wonder if any of you have ever gotten "bored" of music, and whether you eventually just got back into it. What do you all think?

Hi,
Don't think you have to worry about always liking or hating music. Tastes change, habits change, but doesn't mean much.
I can safely say that I'm not a fan of the overly produced pop music performed by people who can't sing without an auto-correct. My opinion. Not to say there aren't talents out there. Love Adele, Beyoncé, Bruno Mars.
If you don't like what you're currently listening to, then try different genres. I like some country artists (that statement would not have come from me when I was 20).
And there isn't too much to worry about even if you lose interest in music. It's not that important (also something I thought I would ever write).
Roger Ebert once said of movies, which I think can be used for music as well. If there's an oldie out there that you haven't seen, then it's still a new movie for you. If you don't like current, go back and find something or move on to something else. _________________ "Spring's a girl in the street at night"

You could always just skip the listening to music part and go straight to the aesthetic and political judgment part.

In all seriousness, I've faced this before. I tend to get this kind of lethargy when I over-indulge new things. I've had probably one or two burnouts in my time with music where I felt like I either was going too slowly in conquering the Everest that music exploration can be (just listening ad nauseum to every new BNM because that's what I was "supposed" to be doing or something instead of broadening my tastes) or going too quickly and not having a story to tell for the climb (obsessively sticking my toes into every single genre I could find). I find that healthy mixing of relistening helps, particularly reassessing albums that had polarizing effects on me in the past (either great dislike or great like). I've gotten to the point now where I don't really burnout because I just naturally factor in my "regular" life, other hobbies and forms of soaking up downtime, and have a good mix of listening and relistening going on. I also am very excited by what I'm exploring for what it is that I'm discovering, not (just) for the thrill of new acquisition, which I think has left me more fulfilled and has just required enough of a development of my own palette to kind of see what I most want to explore. If that means being a curmudgeon about new indie rock releases, so be it.

Last year I listened to a ton of new albums - if my number of ratings are correct I almost doubled the number of albums I've heard - and I definitely encountered this. I was trying to balance listening to 2015 releases and my own wish list which continues to grow exponentially, and there were times where I started to get no enjoyment out of music. What I've started to do is set aside "no new listen months" where I try to just go through old favorites and revisit some albums I've liked but only heard once. The only new albums I tend to listen to are ones that I've been anticipating and were just released. Maybe that's a little silly or extreme but it really helps get me interested again.
Honestly though after about a week of that I usually get bored and listen to something new, so I'd say when in doubt listen to some favorites. _________________ And it's hard to be a human being. And it's harder as anything else.

I occasionally get bored of listening, or uninterested in new releases, but it always comes back. I wouldn't worry too much, sometimes a break can be a good thing. Makes you appreciate everything a bit more when you get back into it. _________________ Doubles & Conch

I've had periods of my life where I wasn't interested in listening to any music, weeks would go by without really listening to any at all. But that just allowed a bunch of things to discover to pile up, everything worked out great.

I'm also a huge movie buff and I have trouble being heavily involved in movies and music at the same time. I either spend a couple hours a day listening to music while writing or surfing the net, or I watch two or three movies a day. Either way I'm so immersed in one that I don't make much time for the other. It's usually in binges of 6-9 months each.

Your interest will probably come back, but even if it doesn't, so what? If you're not interested, there's nothing to miss and nothing to fear but change.
