Pretty kewl, is that all you got? One is fierce especially Lars's drum solo - it just proves how underrated Lars is as a drummer.

Yeah, unfortunately that doesn't amount to a whole lot in the case of this album. This album is exhausting to listen to, and not in a good way. It's long, all of the songs are long, the songs all have overly convoluted structures for no particular reason, and there's really nothing concrete to latch onto. None of the songs have any real identity; I feel like you could take apart the songs on this album and cut and paste the individual pieces into different songs and you would end up with more or less the same album. This album was the death of Metallica. RIP Cliff Burton

Sometimes I wish I could word stuff this well. The bold part in particular is pretty much the reason (outside a real lack of bass) I don't think this is a very strong album (although it's leagues better than the Black Album, which was leagues better than what followed). Still "One" is killer, and I'm a fan of the title track although it falls under the aforementioned description. But yeah, their first three albums are bonafied metal classics. If I can bring a point over from the movie directors thread (regarding Francis Coppola) they were amazing in the beginning but the strength of their name combined with the crap they produced after their peak has them high on my "overrated" list. But really, only a handful of metal bands ever have had a trio of albums so strong so they're all time greats regardless of what they have done and continue to do.

I'd say that was The Black Album.
I like this album, it's definitely weaker than every album that preceded it, and the production leaves a lot to be desired (you can't even hear the bass), and Metallica have admitted that, but there are some great songs on here. "One" is obviously a classic, "Harvester Of Sorrow" is great, the title track is great, but I can agree that too many of the songs are overly-convoluted and a bit self-indulgent. While I enjoy the album, it's definitely the beginning of the end, and The Black Album was the full stop. _________________ Progressive Rock

I don't think long songs is a problem, many of the tracks of Master of Puppets or One are long and consist of many individual pieces but it isn't a problem there, but I do agree for a number of other tracks on this album and this is even more true for Death Magnetic (which is maybe even more the death of Metallica)

I think the whole "death of Metallica" thing is just re-spouting critical dislike for a band that decided it wanted to do more than just make the same album over and over. Growing musically and changing band members will have that effect on a group. Metallica didn't die. Metallica evolved. You may not have liked it, but it's really unfair to blame them for making music that was outside of the box they were in.
As for "One"...I have to agree that decribing it as "pretty kewl" is kind of laughable...and then simply quoting word for word another user's thoughts as what you think of the album is just damn lazy. "One" is a powerful track, with actually plenty to latch on to. The lack of bass on the album is distracting (a true production error). But the main condemnation I've heard about Metallica since the black album is that they sold out and changed their sound without regard for their fans. I think it's an old, tired and overused criticism, and they deserve better from listeners. This is a band that people kind of automatically listen to later albums with closed minds based on what others have said...not always what they have heard in the music themselves. _________________ I'm leaning on the threshold
