So what is YOUR favorite music genre?

Please provide typical band examples.

I know I have missed some, I just hope I haven't missed too broad of the spectrum.

I am one who believes that the specificity of genre name has become too often overly useless.

I really wonder what is the minimum number of genres we could widdle it down to to get a consensus that would not be overly insulting to anyone?

Those who know me or who have looked at my chart know I am a proghead so along that continuum I would have to answer rock (which was conveniently positioned at the top of the poll)

Alternative/Indie rock is what I tend to enjoy the most, but I listen to just about everything on a regular basis.

When it comes to music genres, I'm somewhat diverse. But Alternative/Indie is my favorite though.

It was a tough choice between Rock N' Roll and Metal but went with metal, not only because I love both but for some of the bands it's difficult to determine which of the two genres it falls in.
Bands like Black Sabbath, Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne (solo), Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Mercyful Fate, Overkill, Pantera, Judas Priest, The Sword, Van Halen, etc.

It depends on what period of time we're talking about. Overall, I guess you could say I'm a rock guy, but I prefer it to be melodic and a little on the poppy side, but still with a rock edge I also like quirkiness. So in other words, it's hard to put a label on it.

I'm a big fan of older music, specifically music from the 60's. When it comes to that era, I'm all about the British Invasion bands: The Beatles, The Who, The Rolling Stone and the Kinks mainly. I also like Bob Dylan, The Doors, The Zombies, Nick Drake, The Velvet Underground, early soul and Motown stuff, and the list goes on and on. I would have loved to have been a teenager in the 60's. Imagine a time when you could turn on your radio and hear almost nothing but great music. Drool

When it comes to the 70's, I prefer David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen, punk, early new wave, proto-punk, and some post punk, although a lot of the Captain Beefheart influenced stuff people go for around here, I find not that enjoyable. I also like Pink Floyd. Sue me! Not talking

But when it comes to contemporary music.... Let's say mid-80's onward, I listen to a lot of indie rock and pop stuff, or alternative (whatever that is) My heroes include: R.E.M., The Smiths, The Stone Roses, Elvis Costello, The Replacements, Sonic Youth, The Pogues, Guided by Voices, Belle and Sebastian, Pavement, Yo La Tengo, The Flaming Lips, The Decemberists, The National, Wilco, and the list goes on... So since those probably fall under indie / alternative mostly, that got my vote.

Hope that explains it.
