Excellent example of a great album being spoilt by one poor song. In this case it's "Death at One's Elbow" which is just about the worse thing they ever recorded including b sides. Come to think of it would make a pretty good thread as there's quite a few records I'dlump in that category. Prince's Lovesexy is the one that annoys me the most as it would be close to album of the decade if "Positivity" wasn't on there and still be a respectable 40 min + length.

Actually my favourite of The Smiths. A lot of oddly upbeat tracks here although still with the usual bitter/melancholic lyrics.

Agreed that Death at One's Elbow is the weak link but it's only ~2mins

Errr.... No. Personally I've always thought Vicar In A Tutu was the weak link on TQID but as with all things Smiths even their inferior tracks were still infinitely better than anything Simple Minds ever did.

Err...meat is murder (the song).
This is easily my least favourite of the four studio albums. The magic seems to be going a bit for me, though tracks 5 and 6 are massive stand outs and two of their best and if they had kept up that standard then it would be a classic. Think I need to hear it again as its been a while and looking at the track listing I seem to have rated it unfairly low.

Is it solipsistic in here or is it just me?

i like simple minds, but i've heard outrageous fanfare about them (from two friends...brothers) that's puzzled me to no end. for instance, this guy recently told me they're "u2 but better"... i mean, sure, if you're comparing simple minds to vertigo or beautiful day, i'm with you, but any of their 80s output? you've got to be kidding me. and the same goes for the smiths. errr... subjectivity sure, but you go home and try to imitate, and simple minds is the easiest band of the three by a long shot.

we should have a BEA imitation contest some time if people were ever game for it. you pick a band / artist to rip off and steal "their sound", and we make a compilation of it.
