A most excellent hard bop sax album! I love this one all the way through. My favorite Rollins and one of the top Sax albums of all time (currently #4 for me). Rollins is on fire throughout and it sure doesn't hurt having sidemen like the great Tommy Flanagan on piano and Max Roach on drums.

Absolutely fabulous album. The opener "St. Thomas" is sublime and an absolute must for your musical diet.

60 years on and it's still going strong. One of my favourite jazz albums.

My favorite of Sonny's after "Way out West". That opener is a classic indeed.

Echoing the comments above, one of the all time great jazz albums. For those who are yet to dip their toes into the vast jazz ocean Saxophone Colossus is an ideal place to start.

I'd take a sax soloist over any brass.

And the drumming on this is great.

I'll take trumpet over all those goose honking sounds any day. But I absolutely love this album, and Sonny's soloing. IMO that's a testament to how great this one is, that it so easily overcomes my natural bias and still vaults into the top echelon of my jazz collection.

hehe - something tells me you also prefer the guitar over the bass.

Well, that would be proof of jumping to conclusions not being wise Shocked

I love bass. I actually play bass. (I play guitar also, but I've devoted most of my time to bass)

On any given day, I could name my bass heroes much more quickly than my guitar heroes (although I have many of both).

Caveat: this is mainly for rock and electric jazz. For blues and acoustic jazz, I lean back toward the guitarists.
