What are the best female bands? I know people are gonna ask who qualifies, so let's make some rules. I dont mean girl singing groups; such as the Supremes. Thats for another day. Nor bands with only a female singer or female leader. I actually meant ALL FEMALE, but thats problematic. So lets say: more than half the instrumentalists have to be female. Off the top of my head, these are my favorites.

L7
Breeders
ESG
Fanny
Blond : ish (techno group)
Throwing Muses
Sleatter-Kinney
The Roches
The Raincoats
The Deadly Nightshade
Babes in Toyland

Post-punk, indie-pop and riot grrrl are your friends. All the following 100% female (apart from Slits drummer and the guitarists in SA and BK) - the most glaring omission thus far first (and with a giant sleeve art pic just to rub it in):

Cut by The Slits

First Songs by Kleenex

Beach Party by Marine Girls

Demonstration Tapes by Dolly Mixture

Sound Of The Westway by Chin Chin

Shop Assistants by Shop Assistants

Tiger Trap by Tiger Trap

I Will Be by Dum Dum Girls

All Girl Summer Fun Band by All Girl Summer Fun Band

Betti-Cola by Cub

Le Tigre by Le Tigre

Pussy Whipped by Bikini Kill

And my personal favourites:

Teulu Yncl Sam by Sidan

5 Welsh folk songstresses from Yr Wyddgrug.

Love & Glitter, Hot Days and Music by Helen Love

3 Welsh Ramones/happy hardcore obsessives from Swansea bay.
