Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 3% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 77.0/100, a mean average of 76.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 77.2/100. The standard deviation for this album is 13.9.

This is a really bad way to judge music, but do we really need this album in 2016 (or 2013 as the case may be). If you're a fan of Wire, Joy Division, Siouxsie, Bauhaus, or any of those post punk bands, do you get anything out of that? I listened to this today and all if made me want to do was listen to In the Flat Field.
I can't fault these guys for being influenced by these bands of course, and if this had come first I'd probably love it. But it's at least a little frustrating when the music press in general heralds something like this as fresh and exciting when it's honestly kind of a retread. I've always found post punk kind of a narrow genre to begin with so I guess I'm not shocked they bring nothing new, but it would have been nice.
I guess my main issue with this is that it's forgettable. I'd rather listen to any of those other bands I listed than come back to this.
Good album with some great high points, but begins to lose it's excitement on further listens. Their sound and style could use more refining, and I'm excited to see their next full length installment.
Fav Songs: Shut Up, Marshall Dear, City's Full
Least Fav: She Will, Strife
Overall 76/100
Vocals are very reminiscent of Patti Smith at times. And the sound is pretty electric. Yeah, this is stellar.
Every single year, I have a very small spot for very few punk albums for the end of the year best list. Be it the likes of Cloud Nothings, Arctic Monkeys, or Japandroids. I just don't see it as much of a viable genre anymore, compared to the new ones. That being said, this album fits that very small spot for 2013. Good ass job.
A great album for a great and promising band. And you have to see them live. Jehnny is in a different world (if you have time to spare, read her blog), the bass player just has class and the drummer is so deeply focused on her play that it seems like she will never stop. It's just captivating.
Not a fan of the album.
The vocals were a bit TOO harsh on my ears
Wow.
I don't really see an essential difference between this album and Foxygen's "We Are the 21st . . ." in derivativeness; maybe the formula in the latter album is easier to achieve but the point is that songs can (and should) compensate for lack of originality but I must say in this case they hardly live up to the conceit of the album cover.
