- Post subject: Recommendations For Weird Music?
|
|
I love music that marches to the beat of its own drummer (literally or figuratively!): Captain Beefheart, Zappa, post-1980 Tom Waits, Pere Ubu, Can, early Funkadelic, Faust, Mr. Bungle etc. Looking for recommendations of weird albums from the last 20 years. Some more recent albums I've already heard that fit the bill include the Fiery Furnaces' Blueberry Boat, Esperanza Spaulding's Emily's D+ Evolution and Janelle Monae's The Arch-Android. Some Radiohead, Bjork and Spiderland are close to what I'm thinking of too. Looking more for stuff in the rock/R&B spectrum, but I'll take recs for rap (heard Madvilliany already) and recent jazz that's not already on any of Scaruffi's lists.

Probably the best Rock album Ive heard that's not yet rated or ranked by Scaruffi is:
Croce - Father Murphy (2015)
I think Scaruffi will probably give it an 8/10 whenever he rates it, which (if I'm right, which I may not be) means it would rank as one of the best albums of the decade.
It's a cross between the Residents' absurd, dadaist theatre, The Velvet Underground's hypnotic drone and deathly rituals, and Faust's demonic, cataclysmic noise, in a very expressionistic, suspenseful, occult and nightmarish atmosphere. _________________ Best Classical

I have Gris-Gris, my favorite Dr. John album natch. Heard of Exuma, but haven't checked them out yet. Seen Andrew Jackson Jihad's name on the forum, now I have a rec to put with the name, plus two more. Thanks!

Thanks! I actually meant I didn't want jazz recommendations from Scaruffi's lists, not rock/pop, because I know recent jazz better than rock/pop and have studied his lists, but my first post was wordy and subtle distinctions like that are easy to miss in threads. So Scaruffi weird rock recs are fair game! Which ones from the last 20-25 years would you -- or anybody else -- recommend?

What about cardiac events caused by jumpscares that occur?
Thanks a bunch for this arm-long list of recs! I'll be researching these for days, let alone listening!
