So the duo have been going crazy this week. Releasing a new single for four days in a row and feel like there might be more coming in this week. I'm been quite excited and this week has overcharged my hype. Here are the four singles so far. Will edit when the next one will come out. Third album when? And yes it's slated for 2019 but damn this output got me blind-sighted that it could come out earlier.
Maybe later in the weekend I will rank these singles from best to worst. Though for them the worst song of the bunch was still a great to me at least. Also might give a synopsis for the tunes as well.
I wrote down the ranking of all 6 tracks on paper and I decided to revisit them all. Keep in mind when I post my thoughts and ranking the songs, it feels like more of trying to find problems rather than the songs being bad. And sure this does come with a helping of bias since I love the duo. Sure there is a few tracks I don't like from them, but the rest of there stuff range from good to amazing. So come tomorrow, there will be a helpful serving of praise.
Well, it's finally here. I'm here to rank out the tracks and provide some info for these songs. Now, like I said yesterday even when there is a "worst" for the ranking, I don't hate any song here. I adore all of them. It comes down to finding the song that I love the most. Also this is before any new single or singles come out later. So here we go.
So to me the "worst" track out of this pick would be Ultimatum. And it mainly comes to how the drop of the song doesn't feel finished. Or for better wording feels somewhat empty. Compared to some songs like Holdin On that kept the energy after the drop, Ultimatum didn't. However, there is a lot of stuff I do love of this track. I love how there is bossa nova/lounge influences within the track. I also like that the duo brought Fatoumata Diawara who has a bit of a Sade influence while being distinct. The vocal manipulations at the tail end of the track is also a very nice touch. And there is plenty of other details I could flesh out, but I want other individuals to find them.
Next on the list I would choose Moonlight. So I didn't get to listen to it when it came out. Hell, I was in the middle of the 2017 tournament we are going through. And for the people that aren't aware, go participate. Then the passing Tuesday, not only did I notice Moonlight was up they also uploaded Where Angels Fear To Tread less then a half hour later. And that alone threw me for a loop. Moonlight I would argue is probably the most traditional of there singles. Feeling like it could have fit on Settle with no trouble at all. But damn, the sound of the track makes you feel like chilling on a cloud while travelling across the atmosphere. Or grooving on an elevator while getting to the top floor. The standout of the track is vocal sample of Moonlight within the track.
Fourth place will go to Where You Come From. Now at first, this was the only song out of the bunch where I was a bit disappointed with the track. I felt that this track took a bit to get really good. Thought the second half did make up for it with how dreamy and enveloping the synthesizer is. Sharing the chilling on a cloud vibe from moonlight. Now with what I mentioned earlier you would think this would be the "worst" track. However, the track grew exponentially for me. To the point where the song really reminds of the best quality of there second album Caracal. An album that wasn't received fondly by certain fan circles or some internet critics. But to me was incredible. And it comes down to finding little details in the song. The first half became this where the track grows very subtlety if the listener isn't paying attention to it. Hell I didn't notice the faint speaking passage at the beginning or near the halfway point of the song where there is a hi hat that is in touch of the groove for the track. Hell speak to me later and I could see this being my favorite track of the bunch. Also love the vibe and how they sample Kamal Keila as well as other loops from a record label called Habibi Funk. Maybe Jimmy Dread or Hayden can chime in on this since I will admit I'm not that well knowledgeable of that particular scene. But damn this grew on me.
Third place goes to Love Can Be So Hard. Flipping the Princess song Say I'm Your Number One into a style that I wouldn't even think the duo were capable of doing. Hell some people where shocked that they decided to go Future Funk on us. Would blend in with acts like Saint Pepsi or Macross 82-99. And man I was shocked. It feels like it came out of that era. But the bigger shock is how it's a lot more energetic compared to the original track since the original track was produced by Stock Aitken and Waterman, well known producers for the 80's. Felt like the blueprint of that decade. And it's a lot slower compared to there bigger hits. But back on track, Love Can Be So Hard is so blissful and bright that the track ends up being a bundle of joy. A track for future summer hangouts as well as a dancefloor starter.
Now second place and first place to me was tough choice to choose. But I couldn't have dilly dally for that long. So number two goes to Where Angels Fear To Tread. The intro alone for this track made me drop my jaw by how striking the synth sounds are. But the rest of the song carries out a very bouncy, warm and hopeful ode that feels in vain of the 1950's/early 1960's. Coming down to the sample from acapella jazz act The Four Freshman. Feels very elegant in design and just makes me personally happy. If there was a complaint and this comes more as a nitpick is that I wish the jazz outro of the track was more longer. Like I need maybe 30 more seconds of that to feel satisfied. But other than that, love it.
And finally, my favorite track of this pick would be Funky Sensation. God Damn, this from beginning to end was just wonderful. The sample of the same title from Gwen McCrae gets a massive upgrade that is just a catchy from the beginning. Feeling like it came out of Studio 54. Puts a massive smile on my face since It was released a few hours before I woke up for Thursday. And the track charged me up for the rest of that day. Sure I didn't write up as much for the track, but the videos are there. Click on them, maybe you will like them. And that's it.
So, I thought I had all the samples. I don't. But I do have them for Love Can Be So Hard and Funky Sensation. Also there was news that came out that not only in the year break, the duo had put together 80 to 100 ideas. As well as these singles might not be on the album. So this third album is still gonna be unexpected for them till we get the preorder option on I Tunes. Here is the link to that info.

I love that you get this passionate about them. I’m rifling the singles now and I’ll share my ranking and thoughts, if that’s all good? Starting with Ultimatum now. _________________ Some RYM paraphernalia:
What can I say. They were the only electronic act that impressed me so much on pop radio this decade and when I heard Latch, I was hooked.
That song is synonymous in mind with house parties from when I was 15. Absolute banger, so I understand why haha. On Moonlight now and it’s some groovy shit. _________________ Some RYM paraphernalia:
