  • Post subject: 1969 Party Playlist
Hi all! I'm planning a New Year's Eve party with the theme "1969" and I'm looking for some recommendations for my playlist. I've gone through the Woodstock setlist, BEA's 1969 top and the year's billboard hot 100 but would like to fill a couple more hours. The songs should be from 1968, 1969 or 1970 (or I'll never get to six hours) and preferably catchy or well-known (or a whacky unknown would be great fun too) - it is a party. Bonus points for moon-related songs. I've had fun with it so far, hope you can help me further & thanks in advance!

Assume King Crimson's "Moonchild" is already on the playlist. If you google "moon songs 1969" or "1968," you'll get some hits, like CCR's "Bad Moon Rising."

Captain Beefheart's "Moonlight on Vermont" should go over great haha.

Might want to consider 1967 music, maybe even over 1970, because in '69 people were still listening to a lot of tunes from then, it might be even more similar stylistically, and, well, they obviously weren't listening to any 1970 music.

This might give you a few ideas:

"Space Oddity" by David Bowie is the easiest choice. I'm gonna assume I don't need to mention anything by Led Zeppelin or The Beatles.

Just culling through my 1969 chart for songs that feel right for a party:

"Meet On The Ledge" by Fairport Convention
"Million Dollar Bash" by Fairport Convention
"Who Knows Where The Time Goes" by Fairport Convention (fitting)
"Love Without Sound" by White Noise (could even be construed as moon-related, whacky unknown)
"Coming Your Way" by Fleetwood Mac
"My Dream" by Fleetwood Mac
"Marrakesh Express" by Crosby, Stills, & Nash
"Long Time Gone" by Crosby, Stills, & Nash (fitting)
"Stamping Ground (Instrumental)" by Moondog (whacky unknown)
"Lovely To See You" by The Moody Blues (seconded)
"Mosaic" by Third Ear Band (whacky unknown)
"Don't Want To Go" by Forest (whacky unknown)
"Le Goudron" by Brigitte Fontaine (whacky unknown)
"Both Sides Now" by Joni Mitchell (seconded)
"Cinnamon Girl" by Neil Young
"Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" (seconded, and very fitting)
"Chasing Shadows" by Deep Purple
"Green River" by Creedence Clearwater Revival
"The Night Time Is The Right Time" by Creedence Clearwater Revival
"Bad Moon Rising" by Creedence Clearwater Revival (seconded)
"Hunting Song" by Pentangle (unknown)
"Soul Sacrifice (Live At Woodstock)" by Santana
"Gange Mai" by Quintessence (whacky)
"I'm On My Way" by Arcadium
"Fair Warning" by The Guess Who (a bit of novelty, could work for wind down)
"Undun" by The Guess Who (seconded)
"You Doo Right" by Can (super long, but super cool)
"All This Crazy Gift Of Time" by Kevin Ayers (pretty fitting)
"Oleh Oleh Bandu Bandong" by Kevin Ayers (whacky)
"Nile Song" by Pink Floyd (super cool)
"Spirit In The Sky" by Norman Greenbaum (classic)
"I'm The Urban Spaceman" by The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band (comedy, somewhat fitting)
"Canyons Of Your Mind" by The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band (comedy)
"Up On Cripple Creek" by The Band
"1969" by The Stooges (very fitting)
"I Wanna Be Your Dog" by The Stooges

From 1968:

"Danse Kalinda Ba Doom" by Dr. John
"Croker Courtbullion" by Dr. John
"I Walk On Gilded Splinters" by Dr. John
"Burning Of The Midnight Lamp" by The Jimi Hendrix Experience (fitting)
"Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" by The Jimi Hendrix Experience
"Picture Book" by The Kinks
"Balloon Burning" by The Pretty Things
"Death" by The Pretty Things
"A Very Cellular Song" by The Incredible String Band (plenty whacky)
"Hard Coming Love" by The United States Of America
"You Don't Miss Your Water ('Til Your Well Runs Dry)" by Taj Mahal
"The House At Pooneil Corners" by Jefferson Airplane
"Evening Of Light" by Nico
"Fire" by Arthur Brown
"Feelin' Alright?" by Traffic
"Time Of The Season" by The Zombies
"Let There Be More Light" by Pink Floyd
"See-Saw" by Pink Floyd
"Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun" by Pink Floyd

------

"We Did It Again" by Soft Machine (from 1968, it would be cool to sync this up with the ball drop)

The track "Wernher Von Braun" by Tom Lehrer makes explicit reference to the (at the time) impending moon landing. This is a comedy track, and his comment does lampoon the operation.

Also, it's a little older (1966), but "Over, Under, Sideways, Down" by The Yardbirds is super, super catchy and fun.

I really do think if you try hard enough, you can get 50 hours of amazing music from 1969: (it was a pretty amazing year in "popular music")

1969's a good (transitional) year for R&B too:

Can't Get Next to You - Temptations (one of their best rock-influenced songs)
It's Your Thing - Isley Brothers (their first funk song)
Mother Popcorn - James Brown
I Don't Want Nobody to Give Me Nothing (Open Up the Door, I'll Get It Myself) - James Brown
Ain't It Funky Now - James Brown
Cissy Strut - The Meters (their most famous song & one of the best instrumental funk tracks of all time)
Walk On By - Isaac Hayes (dig that trippy guitar riff)
Do Your Thing - Charlie Wright & The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band (sweaty funk also on the Boogie Nights ST)
Mary, Don't Take Me on No Bad Trip - Fugi (great strange funky soul from an unknown)

One thing these have in common is they're all funky to some degree -- obviously good for a party.

Classic party song from 1969 is Sugar Sugar by The Archies

And I think I Heard It Through The Grapevine by Marvin Gaye was a 1969 hit.
Also Octopuses Garden by The Beatles.
Listen To The Band by The Monkees also.
For a slow song there's Dream A Little Dream Of Me by Mama Cass, from 1968.

All good for a party.

Dude, change the year to whatever year Evelyn 'Champagne' King's 'Love Come Down' came out. Your party will be better for it
