Has anyone here ever argued that ‘Only by the Night’ by Kings of Leon is a really great album?

I hadn’t considered, but my wife was just playing it and I realized that like 7 of the 11 songs are basically unskippable, and the other 4 are pretty solid.

As I listen, this album is just way way better than I had ever considered. Always though Kings of Leon we’re fine-ish.. but, this is doing something.

Anyone else on this? Or am I I. An island here?

And then I’ll just go ahead and argue with myself. At the end of the album there is a album there is a song called “be somebody”, which I believe was a radio song. Solid melody, but at the end they try to get fun with the timing on drums and guitar, and fail. Actually kinda bad. You straight up can’t do that on a professional album.

They aren’t good, but this is an enjoyable album.

I haven't heard the album, but it doesn't look like you're on an island. That album's ranked very high, at 546.

We have four albums by Kings of Leon in our top 1000 and nothing by Fela Kuti, Sun Ra, Gil Scott-Heron, Wes Montgomery, Duke Ellington, John Fahey, or The Pharcyde lololololololol.

But yeah, regardless, you're not alone there.

This is a personal favorite of mine. Sure, you could easily argue that this album is not sophisticated or groundbreaking.. But if that was the case it wouldn't hold the same place in my collection. The entire album is catchy enough to have a decent amount of radio-play (at least here in Canada), and it is very soothing at times with some beautiful ballads.

This is an album that I can spin from front to back when I have family over and while nobody will likely be blown away or amazed, noone will complain.

Also.. If you've only heard the radio singles, do yourself a favor and spin this in its entirety.

kings of leon.... they're one of those groups that aren't bad but not particularly memorable. won't change the station over them. they have a few interesting songs, but i'm with hayden. there are much more interesting artists worthy of the top 1000 that i'd rather explore.

Only by the Night is a good album, but it comes after three even better records, and ends up being the height of their career. Critical acclaim, commercial success, multiple Grammy wins. Even though they've put out perfectly serviceable albums since, It's an interesting fulcrum point.

Aside from the times "Be Somebody" comes on at karaoke I don't know that I ever really think about Kings of Leon or this album. I remember it being pretty meh. Couple good pop songs. Sort of a generic rock aesthetic. 2000s were rife with this kind of thing.

I think it's a fairly decent album. But both Youth & Young Manhood and Aha Shake Heartbreak are better. Use Somebody is also one of the most generic and overplayed songs of that mainstream rock 2000s stream
