Very smooth, and yet very sharp, dark, sinister at times. How new this sound was, at the time! There was Soul II Soul two years before but certainly not as edgy, and tuneful.
I listened to this album the other day for the first time since the mid-nineties, and it's still fantastic (apart maybe from One Love which is slightly flat and boring).
