Post subject: Original Versions of Songs That Were Bigger Hits By Others
I have a Covers / Standards thread, now I'm starting a thread for original versions of songs that were later bigger hits for others. I'll start with the original version of "Midnight Train To Georgia" by Cissy Houston. This song was originally to be called "Midnight Plane To Houston". And there's a Farrah Fawcett connection. You can read the story here https://www.texasmonthly.com/list/the-s...ne-to-hous ton-1972/ . Cissy Houston is the one who made it "Midnight Train To Georgia". She was the first to record it and changed the lyrics and title because, as Cissy said “My people are originally from Georgia,” she said later, “and they didn’t take planes to Houston or anywhere else. They took trains.” Personally I'm glad the changes were made. To me "Midnight Train To Georgia" just has a better sound to it than "Midnight Plane To Houston". Cissy's version is slower than the Gladys Knight & The Pips version, but still good in my opinion. I personally like both versions.
Song "Comme d'habitude" by Claude François , published in 1967 . Then translated/adapted in english , became "My Way" (Paul Anka , Frank Sinatra and many other artists...)
Oh, and another one is "Respect". The song was written by and originally recorded by Otis Redding. But Aretha Franklin had a bigger hit with it and its actually known as her signature song.
Oh, I just thought of another obvious one. Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You", which Whitney Houston covered and had one of the biggest hits ever with it.
