Ah man, I adore this album. I know, it's pretty derivative of all the dadrock that came before it (it pretty much straight-up steals from Magic Bus on one of the tracks), and I could even see this coming out today and drawing a similar reaction to what Greta Van Fleet gets today.
This is just one of those albums that hit me at exactly the right time, and I can't really think objectively about it.
I was 14 when this album came out and I was fully diving into music, but up until that point, all the music I had been discovering had come through my parents. I'd tell them about a band I liked (first band I ever got into was Styx - heard Mr. Roboto on a friends MySpace page and loved it) and they'd point me in the direction of another band.
I also used to download the iTunes free song of the week, and one week, it was Dimension off of this album, and I absolutely LOVED the song. So I went out to the local Borders and bought this album on CD with my own money - they were the first band I ever discovered completely on my own, and I completely devoured this album. I think I know every word to every song on it.
I still think it's a pretty great album, and the best Wolfmother ever did. Andrew Stockdale's vocals are absolutely soaring, his guitar work is fabulous (some really killer riffs on this album), Myles Heskett's drumming is so frenetic and wild, he's banging on toms left and right and it just gives so much power to the song (like the ending of White Unicorn).
It's a great album, and one that I personally love dearly. Unfortunately, it seems Stockdale is kind of a pain to work with, cause the band broke up after this and Stockdale reformed it with all new people for Cosmic Egg (which was also great). Since then though, it's been diminishing returns, but I'll always love this album. _________________ Progressive Rock
