I feel like we never got around to discussing NO THANK YOU on this site. It was released at such a weird time for a follow-up to such a colossal record. Gorilla's a highlight for sureโ€” and it gets my voteโ€” but that entire album is phenomenal. Her approach to it was so sharp and matureโ€” really great bars everywhereโ€” I feel like it's what Danny Brown and Kendrick did (a la uknowhatimsayinยฟ and DAMN) but maybe... better? It's a low-down reprise to a bombastic record. She goes off on these beat-poetry-esque verses and you sit there and baskโ€” it's quite something, and an exceptional example of what hip-hop can be. One of my favourite records of 2022, but I'm going to double down on saying she should have waited until January to drop it. December always has some stupidly great album released in it, but it feels like a ghost month.

Too early in the morning to form better thoughts. Just showing support. Great stuff.

Yeah, Little Simz. Wasn't convinced by Angel Olsen's last LP even though this track is decent. But she's not a country singer imo.

Wasn't very keen on Little Simz's previous effort, so I didn't listen to that one, if I'm to believe what I heard in this matchup I might very well have been wrong, like this.

One of the toughest matchups yet...both tracks are fantastic. Going with Angel Olsen though on this one by just a hair. I agree with Hayden's comment on NO THANK YOU. It was a great way to follow-up her previous album but yeah the timing was a bit weird and it slipped through the cracks at least for me for a while. I actually just got around to it about a week ago. Nevertheless I love the album but there's a few other tracks I would have picked before Gorilla. Angel Olsen's album didn't blow me away but Big Time is my favorite off the album and it always hits the spot for me when I hear it.

Big Time just feels like the most complete song I heard from last year. It sounds timeless and I really like hearing a waltz for a change! For me, All the Good Times would also have been a good choice but I found this one a bit more addictive and I preferred the video as well. Iโ€™m in the same boat as Travelful in not really getting into the album, but I could certainly appreciate the singles. This is a tough first round draw mind youโ€ฆ

Angel Olsen - Big Time
The last year's album is familiar to me as an attribute of the final ratings.
I expected more, but against the general background, it was not a fly in the ointment.
Recognizable voice and melodiousness provide support for the song.
This is not a difficult choice for me, it would seem.

Little Simz - Gorilla
The performer deliberately took the album out of the competition for the ratings of the year.
I had no reason to delve into this release, I'm not a fan.
The song seemed insipid to me musically.
But I'm already convinced that music is not the most important thing in this project.
Perhaps there are key phrases that blow your mind.
However, without musical support, this is shooting into the void.

I'm a big (horrible pun, I know) fan of Big Time and its massive '60s vibes, but how am I supposed to vote against Little Simz? Impossible.
Tough luck for Angel Olsen.
