And yet again a mediocre album cover gets picked because it's content happens to be very popular.

The crowd was being all apathetic in that gig. They were not singing along and annoying the band because of it. In a fit of rage (and to get a reaction) Paul Simon bashed his guitar onto the stage. That way they might pay some attention. Anyway, photographer got it just at the right moment.
