|
I've noticed that most people on this website have a very wide range of musical taste. I'm new here and I don't believe I'm TOO close-minded about music but I do tend to stick with oldies (which is unusual since I'm only 19 years old). You can check my top 40 chart to see what I'm talking about. Do you guys think that people's musical tastes have become so broad due to sites like this, or is it just coincidence that people that come here already have a broad taste? I'm now wondering if my musical taste will grow so greatly. I'd like to make it clear that I can enjoy and appreciate many types of music (except most modern rock and all this electronic music stuff people my age listen to) but I definitely specialize and concentrate on classic rock, metal, and blues.

I used to be very prejudiced against a lot of music - namely rap and pop. Best Ever Albums has taught me that every genre has it's masterwork and that almost all music deserve merit.

Music sites help because it makes it easier to learn about and get access to all kinds of different or marginalized styles and bands, as well as seeing different arguments and perspectives on why people like the different things that they like.
That said, it usually requires some sort of personal effort to understand or enjoy unfamiliar types of music, if you don't want to or don't try to expand your taste, chances are it wont expand much.

Isn't it partly why we're here?

Not sure.. originally I came here to see what others thought about the albums that I already like but it's been interesting to see how the people on these kinds of sites are far more varied in their musical taste than most people. It'll definitely take me a while though.

Yeah, that's why I said "partly".

Compared with most active members of this site, my musical taste isn't all that broad, but I will say that BEA has helped me to discover many many albums and bands I otherwise never would have heard of or given the time of day. Some that come to mind: Neutral Milk Hotel, Iron and Wine, Built To Spill, Sufjan Stevens, Grizzly Bear, Radiohead...
I still basically start and end with some sort of rock, but within that broad genre BEA has opened me up to a ton. I've definitely developed more of an indie type taste.
