Metal Machine Music... certainly the most interesting thing Reed has ever released... and I mean this is Lou Reed we're talking about. Two sides of nothing but guitar feedback and varying degrees of noise, this album is widely regarded as the biggest failure of Reed's career, assuming that the whole thing isn't just some massive joke.
Anyway, to paraphrase the question most people ask when hearing this album: "WTF am I listening to?"
So let's all try to answer that
What do you see MMM as? Reed's attempt to get booted from his major label contract? A misunderstood masterpiece? Something else entirely?

I haven't heard this particular album, but stuff like Lulu just proves to me that Lou Reed is too full of himself. He's made some great music but he thinks he can fart into a microphone and sell that. He actually believes he invented heavy metal... what a joke. _________________

having seen how Lou Reed approaches interviews a few times, i would say that the whole inventing heavy metal thing was a joke on his part

Whether its a joke, an attempt to get out of a record contract, or sincere, Metal Machine Music is still fairly interesting as a piece of early noise music. At the same time my (limited) experience with other noise music makes me think their are far better releases within the genre. The use of static and feedback is quite evocative, but gets old quickly. I wish the album was either shorter, or changed/developed more over its course.
So its not a bad album, but not a great one, maybe slightly above average.

It's interesting, it sounds kind of nice to me actually... although it's been improved in different ways over the years I think. Merzbow, Hijokaidan, Li Jianhong, Incapacitants... if someone is new to noise music, I recommend Kazumoto Endo, who has more variations in sound and rhythm in each song (also has the highest rated harsh noise genre album on RYM).
I don't know much about noise music outside of east asia at the moment. It's one of the most fascinating styles of music to me, also onkyo and music concrete.

I also love musique concrete, took me a while to get it but I dig it now. I'm actually trying to get in to more noise right now. I'll check out the names you mentioned
