I like Skylarking, but never really understand how it so often outranks some of their earlier records.
For what it's worth, I'd rank XTC's albums as so:
Drums & Wires
Black Sea
English Settlement
The Big Express
Skylarking
Nonesuch
Mummer
White Music
Oranges & Lemons

Not a bad list, though I wouldn't have Nonesuch or Big Express quite so high. Also I really liked Oranges & Lemons, one of my favorites of there's ...
PS You heard Apple Venus or (more hopefully) Dukes of the Stratosphere's stuff? Since Dukes is just XTC's alter ego, it's weird to not see here ... _________________

It sucks that the year of my birth was one of the more lackluster years for music (albums especially), but this is a definite exception. Alt-pop classic.

Yeah, I'm quite familiar with Dukes and the Apple Venus records. Just didn't feel like trying to throw that into any sort of order.
Big Express is inconsistent compared to something like Skylarking, but it's also got some of my favorite XTC songs. But this order may also coincide with the fact that I have the top 4 + Mummer on vinyl _________________ http://jonnyleather.com

We were born in the same year then I think it was not a worse year than any other pre-1986 years of the decade. The later years of the 1980s were better though.
The Queen is Dead, Skylarking, So and Graceland make it a quite good year I think.

So yeah, agree with Mecca that it shouldn't be considered top tier XTC let alone their masterpiece

86 wasn't really that bad at all.
Great records from Nick Cave, Cocteau Twins, Smiths, James, New Order, Arthur Russell, Peter Gabriel The Beastie Boys, Talk Talk, Go Betweens, Spacemen 3, Sonic Youth, REM, This Mortal Coil, Run DMC, etc etc
probably a much deeper year than 82 (my year of birth) _________________ http://jonnyleather.com
