Grime needs a lot more credit, so I thought I'd start a thread for appreciators of grime and people who are interested/curious about the genre.
What is grime?
Grime is a genre of music that emerged in England during the late 90s to the early 00s. It has its roots in garage, drum n bass and rap. It is very "London-centric" with a majority of the big players in grime being from (east) London or surrounding areas. Grime is typified by complex 2-step, 4x4 breakbeats, generally around 140 beats per minute, or sometimes structured around a double-time rhythm, and constructed from different synth, string and electronic sounds. Stylistically, grime draws on many genres including UK garage, drum and bass, hip hop and dancehall. The lyrics and music combine futuristic electronic elements and dark, guttural basslines. Although, grime tends to have lyrics, instrumental grime is very much respected and apparent in the modern day, some of my favourite grime releases have been instrumental.
Obviously, I've missed a fair few in the important/essential listens sections but I tried my best to keep it brief while still giving respect to the absolute best grime albums.
I haven't been into grime too long (around 2 years or so) and there will most definitely be people who know the genre better than i do and please, if you do, feel free to post or even correct me on anything. I also welcome any additions to the important/essential section and any reccomendations, hope you've enjoyed reading this/checking out some grime! _________________ overall / 2017 / spotify
aw yea. I actually have a chart for this. A genre I always find time for, whether it be for dancing or for headphone listening to some of the more recent instrumental stuff (Logos, Wen, etc.)
DJ Magic's No Hats No Hoods mix is likely my favorite grime release ever, though certain works of Dizzee Rascal, Ruff Sqwuad, Roll Deep, Trimbal, Flowdan, Terror Danjah, and Roadside G's all come close.
One of the most interesting figures in music atm imo. Don't suppose you've heard these similarly styled albums?
Absolutely love that Strict Face album and I used to jam Mr. Mitchs so much like 3 months ago, could probably do with revisiting it to be honest. Will definitely check out the other two ASAP. _________________ overall / 2017 / spotify
my breadth of knowledge in grime is embarrassing but I really like what I've heard from Dizzee Rascal, Stormzy, Skepta, JME, Kano, etc. _________________
